I'm looking into having the water pump replaced for the first time on my '99 Z24. I just wanted to know if it's highly recommended to buy the AC Delco pump from the dealership or if it's ok to buy one from Autozone, NAPA, etc. The dealership quoted me like $160 for the Delco, and I think I can get a Duralast pump from Autozone with a limited lifetime warranty for around $50.
I'm guessing my 2nd question would be, should I even have the water pump replaced at all? My car has 150,000 miles on the stock pump with no leaking. The only reason I'm considering having the pump replaced is because my timing system is being replaced. If I had the pump done by itself, the labor would be about $500. If I have it replaced at the same time as the timing system, the pump labor will only be $200. Anyone have any suggestions?
I would say have it done at the same time...
I put a prestone pump in both of my cars. The one in my 02 is starting to weep a little, but considering what it has been through I cant complain. The on in my 98 has been holding up just fine, although it has only been in there since Oct.
I did the HG on my 98 when I did the WP and cam housing gaskets because I was only 10 bolts away from doing it anyways. If you have the engine torn down as far as the timing set it wouldnt be that much more work to just replace the WP.
I just did my timing chain and tensioner with all new sprockets and guides and also did the water pump as well cuz it saves time when doing it together. I always trust the dealership parts, im not fond of aftermarket parts and even though the water pump is covered if it fails or leaks but then u have to pay the labor to install it AGAIN. but its your money and your car
Chris, if you want to stay with GM parts, go to GMPARTSDirect.com and order part#12482714. This is for the water pump. Ordering from GMpartsdirect will save you $55.36 compared to the dealership price. If you would like the gasket part numbers, here are the ones the dealship stated I needed for the repair: #12360462, #24574584, #24575243. Prices for the gaskets are in order $33.85, $32.83, & $32.83. I just had my WP replaced and got all my stuff from GMPartsdirect and saved $105 from what the dealership wanted to charge for the same stuff. You'll have to wait about two weeks, but it was worth it to me.
As far as warranty is concerned, the Chevy dealership here told me that almost all Dealerships are now offering a lifetime warranty on the WP.

when my pump went out several years ago i went to pep boys and got a bosch water pump and i think it cost me 35 bucks for it. i sold the car to my gfs brother who still drives it. the water pump has easily 70k on it and no problems at all.
I have used a non GM water pump on a 2.4 before, and would do it again. Since you are getting the timing system replaced I would for sure go ahead and replace the water pump. Smart thinking to do so.

Hey guys, thank you for all the info.....I greatly appreciate it. I wish I would have thought about gmpartsdirect.com earlier. I was just planning on using a generic brand pump, and then at the last minute I didn't wanna take a chance & decided to go AC Delco. My car was scheduled to go into the shop today so I didn't have time to order it online. The dealership quoted me $167.50, but when I went to get it, they only charged me $150 with tax. So I didn't get it for $112 shipped($87 + $19 ship + $6 tax) from their website, but I did save about $20.
I know this is slightly off the topic here, but I asked the shop today about flushing & filling my coolant. I wanted to make sure they were going to use the pink/orange Dexcool since that's all my car has ever seen. They told me that the pink/orange stuff is harmful to the head gasket or something, and they never use it. They use the green stuff to replace the fluid in any car that previously had Dexcool. Is this going to screw up my cooling system? I'm thinking about calling back in the morning & telling them that I'll bring in the pink stuff myself in the morning for them to use, but I have a feeling that they'll say they won't warranty their work if they use that stuff. Anyone have any suggestions?
what? thats bull, lol, they dont know crap
I would use dexcool... The shop should know never to mix what the cars had in it before. Just my .02
DexCool is all I have ever used in my Cavalier. Works OK for me.
The cars that have problems with Dex-cool have the same problems with teh green stuff. Tell the shop that your car is supposed to have Dex-cool in it and that is what they will put into it when they do the work.
Yeah the shop does not know there ass from a hole in the wall, but I'm pretty sure all coolant now days is compatible with each other. I still use dexcool.

No All coolant is not compatible!!!!! you will not get all the dexcool out of the system no mater what you do and i have seen them create a sludge in the bottle and then you need a really good coolant flush to get it all out. The Green coolant is the worst type of coolant I have ever seen in new vehicles. AND that shop is very ignorant and your the customer so to tell you that they will not go with the factory coolant even when you ask.
prestone makes a coolant that will mix with ANY kind of coolant, but other coolants are not mixable
I know there is at least 3 brands that are mixable.

ive always used dexcool.. ive been using the green stuff for like a year now.. everytime ive ever used dexcool.. 100k miles++ yea right.. it always tends to get muddy.. the green stuff is perfectly still lime green. not to mention green stuff is alot cheaper.. you may have to replace it sooner according to the mileage rating but i wouldnt leave the dex cool @!#$ in for very long anyway
Ditch the Dex-Cool for sure. I don't care what anyone says, that @!#$ is corrosive. Go with the Prestone green stuff. The bottle says it can be mixed with any color fluid. Switched over to that in both my vehicles and never had a problem.

Can you prove it is corossive????? I highly doubt it. Never had a problem with Dex-cool in any vehicle in my family including a 4.3L. If its so corrosive how come it doesnt do anything to parts or tolls that have been sitting in it for over a year?
I can't prove that it is corrosive, but no one can prove that it isn't either. On my Cavalier, the plastic inlet on the head totally deteriorated and fell apart. My dad's Chevy truck 5.7L has all sorts of leaks from gasket failure, likely due to Dex-Cool. Sure, they say it is because of bad gaskets which may be true to some extent but I think Dex-Cool contributed to the problem. My mom's car doesn't leak, but it turned all sludgy and nasty. Can't imagine what it looks like inside the engine. There is a reason why there are so any lawsuits over Dex-Cool. I doubt it is all coincidence. I'm just saying that it is better to be safe than sorry, and switch out the Dex-Cool.

Plastic gets brittle over time, especialy when subject to heat. @!#$ breakes. Its amazing how my 98 Z had the origional coolant in it until I did teh head gasket last fall. The only reason I did the HG was because I was replacing the water pump (I would expect to have to replace an almost 10 year old pump) and was only a few more bolts away from doing the HG. I find it to be perfectly safe to use in my own engines and have never seen it sludge up like every one claims. even in teh dealer the only times I saw it sludge up was when there was some other mechanical failure, teh customer put the wrong fluid in it, or someone put those damn coolant tabs in there. Of the numerous intake gaskets I did only one look like an odd failure, all the others had clearly visible cracks in them. The plastic will do that. Same thing happens on the Isuzu 3.5L gaskets and those are only exposed to air. There are lawsuits because we live in a sue happy society and scum bag lawyers know GM is more likely to just pay than fight it as fighting it will most likely cost more in the long run. If Dex-cool was so bad GM would have changed what it used when the problems first started showing up.
^^^Well you have your opinion and I have mine. I refuse to use it.
