Havn't posted on this site in a while. Had dreams of buying a J body, then a DSM fell in my lap and ruined my life... Anyways, enough talk about me.
I should be replacing the water pump on my friends sisters 2.4 sedan. He said the pump is weeping. I did some research and the 2.2 pumps are simle since the timing chain is like 3 inches long and the pump is driven by the belt. 2.4 is another storey though since the pump is drivien by the timing chain.
Is there a walk though on doing the timing and water pump? Something with pics would be really helpful.
Thanks in advance.

Also what should I replace while I'm in there? Obviously the chain, What about the tenioner? What abou other things I can't conceive. Do these motors have balance shafts? What gaskets are reusable? Which ones should be replaced?

I haven't done this job (yet), but there's a write-up in library & information->faq->maintenance. Good luck. - Mark
to anwer some of your ?'s, you can re-use the gasket for the timing chain cover if it is in good condition. When you buy the water pump, you will receive 3 gaskets, use all of them... If you plan on changing the thermostat, you have to buy an o-rind seperate. I would replace timing gears, all 3 guides, chain, and if you want to pay the extra 40 buxks, a new tensioner, most places sell the whole set. I got mine for 180 bucks. It is NO SMALL JOB!!!!! There is 3 bolts you have to buy, because you are not supposed to re-use them, they are the motor mount bolts that go to the block. Get a haynes manual, it tells you step by step how to, thats what I did, and I accomplished it and I am far form being a mechanic.
Hope this helps.

You dont have to worry about timing the engine again. If you press in the tensioner, there is enough slack on the timing chain to remove the water pump. Just make sure the chain stays on the two cam gears up top and the gear on the crank at the bottom.
As for 'resetting' the tensioner when you're putting it all back together, all I did was take a flat-headed screwdriver, lay it flat on the plunger of the tensioner, and push down until it popped back out. I think the haynes/chiltons manual describes the process in a similar fashion.
Getting all the bolts off the timing chain housing requires you to jack the engine up and down, some are in some awkward spots. Block of wood under the oil pan and you're good to go.
I think I'm gonna replace the chain also. Cars got like 120k miles or so. Any write up on timing the motor, hopef ully with pics, other than haynes manual?

haynes is only 20 dollars, worth the investment, especially when you are doing a $300 plus job...

dont replace the water pump if it is just weeping. it is normal for those 2.4's to weep fluid, i work at a GM dealership and there is a service bulltien out about it, it does not require replacement.
Normal for the pump to weep? I thought this was a sign to look for when the pump need's to be replaced? Please explain!!!!
