3 dollar bulb swap turned into a real headache!
Sunday, December 19, 2010 1:02 PM
I attempted to change out the hvac bulbs in my sunfire yesterday. Well I ended up shattering the bulbs! So after I got done trying to pull the bases out of the sockets it was dark out so I decided to finish in the morning. Well I ended up having to use the car last night and noticed the guage cluster lights are out, and the dimmer switch is out. My cd player works fine and the odometer still lights up. I checked the fuses and they look good, what the hell? Any ideas how to correct this?

Did you replace the bulbs you broke yet?

If not, go do that, they should all work.

Did you replacing the bulbs? maybe the base of the bulbs still routed power around to the cluster, I'm not that educated in the electric parts of cars but I did forget to replace a ground wire on a starter once on an old car and everything worked great except the windshield wipers....od thing that a starter ground is also windshield wiper ground

There is no ground wire on a starter.... It is grounded by the physical bolting to the block ( the block is grounded)so your said issue could not happen..

To the op--- a lot of bulbs like that are soldered onto a base . In which you replace the base or socket and the bulb in one unit. IE if you pull the bulb out of the base and just put a new bulb into said base.

thanks for the tips! I messed around with the sockets again and I guess there was still some of the old bulb stuck in them. I got that taken care of and put the new bulbs in, bam everything works! So thanks for the advice because I was beginning to think i'd have to take the car in to get checked for electrical gremlins! I totally suck when it comes to anything electrical.
