Angrier Johnny's (AJ) Problems
Friday, February 18, 2011 12:50 AM
I bought my car with 65595 miles on it & 5 miles later on the way home laughed (& took a picture) when it rolled over to 66600 miles. Anyways after suffering two car wrecks from being hit from behind, AJ has always ran rough. (I don't know about the first one, but saw some damage & different coloured replaced parts from it, the second one I was spun around twice)
AJ is a 02 5SPD 2.2 OHV Cavy & is having problems. My OBDI&II reader is saying my cavy has malfunctioning o2 sensors (Heater & O2), Catalytic Converter, & EVA
Recently I've replaced the head gasket & all other parts therein with the set from O'Reilly's, ran alittle smoother
Replacing the IAC Sensor helped make the ride alot smoother, as that the previous was all crudded
I changed out the TPS, VSS with no change
Both O2 Sensors were replaced with new functioning ones & the malfunction lights still hasn't gone off.

I've ran Seafoam through AJ & I'm planning on replacing the fuel filter. When I was replacing the head gasket I took the connectors off the computer & O2 checking for connectivity to the O2 sensor wires & it was good. So at this point I'm leaning to the computer being bad &/or needing to be reflashed. Anyone else have any ideas or help? I was kind of hoping 3rd Cavy out of four is a charm... Any help would greatly be appreciated!

BTW
I get asked alot about it so here it is: First Cavy had four accidents, I only caused one, but two expeditions with the same insurance co. totalled it out twice in the same week (+a mustang where the guy jumped out & yelled My Christmas Present after having bought the new first year of 06 mustang for two weeks I was rolling). Second Z24 I loaned out to my neighbor & she decided to destroy it & then give it back. Fourth I bought for $300 two months later sold for $750.

I almost forgot, problems it exhibits.
When at a red light or stop whenever I press the gas it hesitates & almost dies... (Thinking fuel pump or filter, but it's been a year since last replacement so I'll start there) always stays in the 1200 to 2200 RPM band while driving & drops to 800 when at idle.
Since replacing sensors the starter will start on the first crank, but half the time needs it with the foot on the gas. So yup, Satan is my motor, & appropriately named Angry Johnny.

Have you checked plugs, wires, vacuum lines?

make sure your not using Bosch o2 sensors. They don't work well with our cars well. Most others work like a dream. You did check the cat to make sure it's not clogged?

I am only saying check your cat because you said it has always ran rough after the two rear end accidents. Might of knocked the guts of your cat loose.

after replacing them, did you clear the check engine light and it came back? you cant expect the light to go away right away

It don't matter if he replaced them with working ones, but if they were Bosch, they sometimes work in one cavalier, and wont (most of the time) work in another. If there Bosch's in there, get them out now. Any type but Bosch. I know since I had a Bosch in my girls 96 with a LD9 in it, and I was getting the EXACT same code you are (heater element), I replaced it, and it went away. I wish I would have remembered when i bought the POS Bosch O2.

I would also check for vacuum leaks. Usually starting with the pedal pressed will lead me to think the IAC is bad. But you said you replaced it. When its acting up like that, pull the IAC out, and see if it starts right away, if so the IAC you installed is bad (and yes it does happen) also try cleaning out the port for the IAC really well. If those clog up you will have issues like this.

Next, would lead my think your coils or ICM is going bad. Usually just the coils crap out. Maybe time to head to a junk yard and grab some coils and a ICM. Never hurts to have a extra set laying around. Good luck.
