knock sensors?

i know the knock sensor changed "size" in 99-00... but when swapping engines, are you better off getting the knock sensor for the block in question? or keeping the sensor that goes with that computer? i have a 02 z24, but swapping in a block from an earlier Z24... and my 02 knock sensor doesnt fit in the new block. so should i just go buy a new sensor for the older style blocks? or should i figure out some way to adapt my sensor to this block? (i know others have done this... but now that i see it, i am not sure i see how this is done... the sizes are very close.. i figured it was a larger difference with more room to make an adapter... but i also fear an adapter might mute the knock signal.. but i also also fear a different sensor may not work the same as the original... and give skewed readings.

so someone tell me what to do here. if there is no difference in signal, i would just assume go buy the sensor for my current block. and know i have a good fit and a new working sensor.

also, what is the sensor directly above the oild filter? i always thought THAT was the knock sensor... but i am guessing that might be some sort of temperature sensor...

Ken, i have the same delema! What route did you go, since your engine is up and running now?

I'm using a 98 block and an 086 head, in my 01 GT.

i dont know if it was the best choice... but it seems to work for me....

I couldnt get a straigt answer about the 98 sensor working if wired into the 02 harness.... so didnt want to gamble on that

i couldnt find an adapter to go from the large hole to the small one... so i couldnt use my 02 sensor in the stock location.

the engine was already in the car, so it was mightly difficult to get a drill up in there to drill and tap a new hole....

soooo.... i realized the sensor itself is the ring looking thing... the bolt is just a bolt.... just holds it against the block... so i took the knock sensor bolt out... and pulled the bolt out of the back of the engine (huge old bolt that holds the tranny and engine together, just above the oil pan, near the firewall, just 2" or so from the knock sensor hole...)

and i took this big bolt, ground the head flat and welded a threaded stud to the top of the bolts head... then re-installed the newly modified bolt, and then slipped the knock sensor onto the stud, and put a nut on and tightened her up.

she has been working just fine since.
