My stupidity...now I have to crack the engine :(
Tuesday, March 08, 2005 4:29 PM
Well, my own stupidity finally caught up with me.

I installed an aftermarket intake a few weeks ago, and when I put it on, I noticed the PCV tube was really loose in the hole. I didn't think anything of it and went on my merry way. Well yesterday I noticed the PCV tube was gone. I simply thought it had bounced out somewhere on the road. I bought a new one and installed it.

So now, I'm coming home from class today and my car starts acting all wierd. I finally get it off the road at a gas station, and for the life of me, I can't find the problem. There was all kinds of clanging and missing and sputtering.

Then it hits me......
.....that damn tube got sucked into the throttle body through the intake.

So I take the intake off, then the throttle body, etc. I make my way all the way down to the head. Everything else was off at this point, so I shined a flashlight down into the port where the valve is located. Sure enough, there is a little peice of aluminum laying on top of my valve. So I reach my grabber down in there and pull it out, just praying that it is still in one peice.

No such luck.

Both the ends are pinched off the aluminum tube.
I think you know what that means.....
....the other two peices are probably laying on top of my piston right now.

Go ahead, call me an idiot.

If I would have thought about it, I would have replaced the tube as soon as I could, but I didn't think it was a big deal. Now I have to tear the head off and remove the metal and just pray that there isn't any damage to the piston or cylinder walls or valves.

time to upgrade your valve train I'm 97.89% sure you bent the valve you pulled the piece out of and damaged the seat.

just take this as an opportunity to give your 2.2 some love

build the top end, SS valves (karo), chromoly pushrods, crane roller rockers (howell), and JBP valvetrain stuff... they hooked me up hardcore with their turbo cam, race springs, chromoly retainers and chromoly locks

you may even want to oversize intake valves and increase some top end power

I didn't oversize my valves, but I got an aggressive port n polish and 5 angle valve job and I couldn't be happier

2.2s like headwork a lot.

what intake did you have ???

sucks to hear about your problems

The intake is for a civic, and i drilled the hole for the pcv tube. I just put off getting a rubber grommet for the hole a little too long. That's where it got sucked in at.

Day one: she's tore apart waiting for the machine shop to call me. As soon as I pick up the head she goes back together.

How about this: the machine shop doesn't do port and polish.....????

Well, here's where she sets.....
This is the worst car I've ever worked on. It was easier to replace the head gasket on my wife's Mitsubishi. This sucks, but it's coming along.

I had to drop the oil pan to change the timing chain, and that was a PITA. Had a bunch of other stuff to do today too, so I didn't get a lot done.

Here are some pics though...

And here is the root of my problem.
The bottom tube is the new one. The top 3 peices are what is left of the original one. The top left somehow made it's way through the intake valve, past the piston, and into the exhaust port. The top right peice was stuck on top of my intake valve. The top middle peice got beat around and crushed by my piston, and was laying on top of the #3 piston when I pulled the head off.
I think I'm just lucky it was aluminum, cuz it didnt' do any damage to anything.

LOL, yeah. There was a guy from down the street stopped to chat one day while I was out there. He was shocked that the code official hadn't stopped and given me a ticket yet. This town is a little snotty when it comes to public appearance and stuff like that.

i changed the timing chain while i was at it. that's the reason the bottom end was torn apart.
