A mechanic told my wife that the 'timing chain' on my 97 cavalier was the reason for the 'ticking' noise in the engine. I am currently on deployment ( I'm Navy) and I need help on this because they want to charge $500 for some Bogus part.

the 2.2 had a ticking sound from 1990-2002 so don't bother with it. it's normal and plain useless to change the chain since it's gonna do it agian in a few miles.

Well, since I have had the car it has gotten progressively louder, is that something to be worried about? Or is there basically nothing I can do to rid my car of this noise?

I'd try changing the serpentine belt on it before doing anything with the timing belt. Serpentine Belt will run you a whole $20 if you put it on yourself and generally last like 40,000 miles and sometimes left if you get a bad one from the manufacturer. I love our cars, cheap replacement parts! (mostly....).

I will try that since it ischeaper, but tome it sounds like the valves are slapping excessively. What can I do about that? Get them tightened or replaced? And if the latter, what are some good ones to upgrade to?
