Sunfire Starting Problem
Tuesday, August 02, 2005 1:16 PM
I've been having a reoccuring problem with my 99 sunfire. The car will occaisionally decide it does't want to start. By this i mean nothing in the the car works, no lights, chimes, power anything. i've tried jumping the car when the happens but still nothing works. The strangest thing is that after leaving the car a while it acts fine again. The indicator on the top of my battery says i have a full change and the car runs fine after a while so i am at loss as to the problem. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this is a large problem i only see getting worse. Thank you

Hi Chris

I would check :-

1. The earth wiring to the chassis and engine-clean cable ends and where they connect to

2. The Starter positive wiring (With the Battery disconnected) This is usually used as a main junction for Electrical power, make sure it is not loose. Check the Battery positive terminal end as well.

3. Unlikely but could be a bad Fusible link

I have seen these symptoms in quite a few cases of a loose/corroded connection-one which appears good visually

Hope it helps anyway

all the above and pull and put back your IGN fuses, there is on inside the car and at least one in the engine bay. a little oxidation goes a long way.

good luck man

First off thanks for the replies. Secondly i did a little bit of what you both said. I found that the positive battery terminal/connector was heavily corroded so i cleaned that with a wire brush and a tool i bought which said was designed to remove corrosion on batteries. I also pulled my underhood fuses and cleaned the connectors throughly. The car started right away so (knocks on wood) hopefully the problem is solved but we'll see in a few days.
