Lately my car has been shifting really funny. It is an 98 2.4 Auto LS. Sometimes when I drive it will shift fine. Then all of a sudden, the transmission will start to shift through the gears really hard, and will not downshift to accelerate. Now this problem is intermtent and happens when I am driving normally down the road and when I start it up and drive somewhere after letting it sit. I found that if I park the car and turn it off, and wait a few seconds and restart the car, the transmission will start to shift normally again. My car currently has 117,000 miles on it and this just started happening. I have no fluid leaks or anything. Can anyone help me diagnose this???

Could be a solinoid in the valve body check it for codes.

It's going into "limp" mode, where it boosts the line pressure.. that's what's causing the hard shifts.
There are quite a few problems that can cause the limp (or open loop) mode to kick in.. done any modifications lately? The most common one is with an intake, the IAT sensor not being plugged in properly. Of course, there's a long list of things it could be.
The easiest way to figure it out is to go to GM and have them hook up the Tech 2 to the car and "watch" what the car is doing.. the hard way is to go thru it step by step..

Thanks for your input. John, it sounds like you have hit the nail right on the head. I have done any mods at all laterly. This happens while i am driving around alot of times. It could be possible that my IAT or someother sensor is bad. Luckly my friend has access to a Tec-2 scanner. So I should be able to find something out. And Old Wolf your right, I do need do do a tranny service.

Mine has been doing that also!! Mine only has 70,000 miles on it, I was going to go get the Auto transmission fluid changed at the dealership. Would there be any codes in there if the check engine light isn't on though. I have a friend at the dealership where we could hook up the tech 2 to it, so what would I be looking for on it?? mine does the same thing also...and finally it threw a code of torque converter solinoid stuck on
