AC and gas milage
Thursday, August 04, 2005 10:59 AM
There was a thread a while ago but which uses more gas... AC or open windows. That is not what I am asking about here.

Im wondering... Does turning the dial to the recycle (aka "MAX AC") use more gas then simply turning on the AC with the button, then adjusting to face/floor as desired?

Also, would higher blower speeds effect it all?

This is a total newb question lol, please dont flame me. I relize the difference would probably be so insignifaicatn anyways that it wouldnt matter, but I am curious.

You're reading my line-break, you are a loser. Lurch <3's the c**k.

Simple answer is no. If its on its gonna drain your mileage no matter what level or setting you have it on. Some may say a higher fan speed = more curent draw= the alt
needing to work harder = even less mileage. But thats reaching. between the lowest setting and the highest setting you may be only talking about .01 less mileage. Doubt you'd notice it.

Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.

To hell with the AC. Nothing but problems if you ask me. I do an hour highway commute up to my college to work 4 days out of the week. Steady 70mph I prefer the windows half-way down. The AC sucks my gas.

I don't think the fan speed has anything to do with it since it is electronically controlled. There is always something wrong or bound to go wrong with my coolant/ ac system in my car so i just simply don't use it, unless there's a girl in the car.

um, the ac will give you better gas milage at 70 mph.

if you stop and go, the windows will give better gas milage.

about the original questions, I really don't know. but i'm going to guess and say that it really doesn't make a difference between max ac and the regular ac.

To add: MAX A/C will keep processing the cabin air. Once cooled, it doesn't haveta work as hard to cool it all over again. The compressor will (should) cycle off more often, freeing up the 4 or 5 dozen horses it yanks out! Regular A/C is OK for not-so-hot use to de-fog the windows/interior. Otherwise it's a waste of energy.

I noticed a decrease in gas mileage too. Car still gets 30 mpg though (2002 Cavalier OHV with the 5 speed transmission). Maybe 2-3 mpg from what I can tell.

God bless America.

i drive from Dallas to Austin pretty frequently and i get the same mileage with the a/c on or off. i remember reading somewhere that on highway speeds, have the a/c on will be more efficient than having windows down because the open windows will increase the drag on the car enough to the point where its less beneficial than closed windows and the a/c on.

Peace Out!!!
