trouble with car starting
Thursday, August 04, 2005 4:17 PM
whats up, i have a '98 sunfire convertible, and for the past few months it studders when im trying to start it. this week it all of a sudden won't start when the engine is hot, but if i let the car sit for a bout an hour it will start back up, but i have no problems starting it in the morning when i leave for work, could the heat be getting to the battery, or is it something else?

Explain "studder" a little more.

well, i guess its not really a studder, the starter tries to turn the engine but the engine doesn't turn, sometimes it sounds like the starter isn't engaging right, but if thats the problem i dont understand why it only does it when its hot.

Your starter is crapping out get a new one. The problem is known as "heat soak"
basicly as you know when the car runs it gets hot under the hood. that heat causes resistance in electrical wires and parts to increase. starters already suck a lot of juice from the batterey when starting but you up the restence....... click click.... no start, once it cools down........ vroom and your off. You may want to get your battery checked as well as your alternator they could be week from age as well.

Good luck.
