what is a common mileage for the 2.4 engine to die
Thursday, August 18, 2005 10:17 AM
i was just wondering what the common range of mileage is for the 2.4L engines in the 96-00 cavaliers.

i have a z24 now, and it has almost 150k, and the oil comes out cleaner then when it went in, and it runs so great right now. it has since ive had it @ 120k.

i im trying to get estimates on engines that were well maintained and cleaned and tuned up, etc. im sure its common for em to get over 200k?

thanks guys!

aslong as you maintaine it there should be no reason it wont last till 200k and more... there not as @!#$ty a motor as everyone says they are... they have their problem areas just like ne other engine...

People always ask this question, and always get the same response.

How was it driven through its life, and of course maintance on it.

It is different for all engines. The engines arent well known for any problems that effect them all.

Take for example the Chrysler 2.7 boat anchor. They had two serious problems, one was oil sludge build up, and the oil pump didnt pump enough oil. It didnt effect some, it effected all of them.
The engines never made it to 80k or 90k, at junkyards used ones sold for thousands of dollars, even with 15 or 20k. Most of the engines failed around 50k, even with perfect oil change records.

A class action suit against Chrylser went no place.

The customers were screwed.

does the fact its an auto or manual also come into factoring an engines life?

and i usually drive good, but sometimes im just race-horny and i really have to beat it up. but im careful about all the tune ups and fluid changes.

it all depends on alot of things, those as stated above are valid also. I don't think it has anything to do with a 5spd/manual unless you rev it more.

Heres my opinion:
it all depends on the way the engine was made too, remember all the parts are mass produced, the slightest imperfection in the metal somewhere could result in engine failure.

Keep it well maintained and drive it well and it should last for quite a bit.

My Sunfire GT 2000 is running perfectly and have 150k too and I did 50k with it. I don't know how he been treated by the last owners but me I like to beat it up and I'm often in about 5500 rpm and the engine is still going fine.. but I often change the oil and "take care of him" ...

And In my opinion it is not so bad to revving the engine in the red line, the only thing is to not stay at these engine rpms... I mean it's more dangerous to go at 5500 rpm on 4th gear (since it takes time to get there) than going at 6500rpm on the second gear since it doesn't take time to get there, you only stay a few seconds in the red line... ( me I never Shift at 6500rpm but...)

that's my way of thoughts

I have 100k on my 2000 2.4L. It runs fine and burns no oil. Check out the thread about how many miles do you have on your 2.4L.

i have around 180,000 thousand miles on my 2.4 and it is still running strong. I drive the car very hard, but do all the regular mantinence that is required and use synthetic oil. I expect to get much more out of this engine as it still has good oil pressure and uses no oil.
