My Engine don't start ...
Friday, August 19, 2005 11:12 AM
I have a 89 Cavalier Manuel 2.2L (Throttle Injection)

I took out the tube going to my tb from the air filter so this way I was able to see the the injector pushing fuel into the Tb. I manually spray some fuel into the Tb before starting it and the engine started very Well

So the problem is probably, in my opinion, that the injector don't spray enough fuel at starting.

But why? I don't know, there are some kind of sensors plugged in the "s-tube" (going from the filter box to the TB) that are not plugged since I took out the tube to do some test on the TB .. I don't know if these sensors can be a problem maybe ?

And I don't think that the fuel pump is the problem since the car once started goes well.

And there's not a lot of fuel in my fuel tank I don't know if this can be the problem but for now I will wait to know if this can be a problem before putting some fuel into it ...$$$

thx

The only sensor that should be on the "s-tube" is the IAT sensor.

Sounds to me like the injector is slightly clogged/plugged. Cleaning it or replacing it should do the trick.

Thanks for your answer...

i'll try to do something with the injector but... are you sure this can be the problem since once started the injector goes well and everythig is going good..

I am not sure of this but I think that the injector should spray some fuel before we start the car I mean when you turn the Key at the last position just before the "Start Position"

and my car doesn't send any fuel when I have my key at this position (just before starting) so the problem is about this but exactly what I don't know..

thanks for your answers !

Try unpluging your coolant sensor. If this helps your sensor maybe bad.

take your injector out and soak it in kerosene for a night. then put it back on.

People say that what doesn't kill you in this life
will make you stronger. I'm not sure if that is true
or not, but i do know one thing-You have to learn from
it and it has to make you better.......it has to.......

Hmm thanks for you help
but I finally know what is the problem ... Well I think but I'm almost sure this is that :

Since the fuel comes too late in the injector the problem is the fuel pump....

but not exactly the fuel pump this is probably a relay that do not do his job to tell the fuel pump to start pushing fuel when I'm turning the key so the fuel pump must be activated by hydraulic pressure instead of electricity so this is why the car take time to start ....

but the problem is now ... Where is this relay ?? I searched it but there are no indications so if anyone can tell me where is that relay on a Cavalier 89 2.0L Manual
this would be fine :-)

Thx for your help guys

Hi Philippe

I think your fuel pump is switched on initially by a signal from the ECM to the fuel pump relay.

Once the engine has started there is an oil pressure switch(The "hydraulic pressure") that closes it's contacts and keeps a 12 volt supply to the fuel pump.

I think the relay is located,as you look at the engine from the front, it is on the far left corner.

It is in front of the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor and to the left of the EGR solenoid valve.

It looks as though the relay is the problem because with the engine running all is well, that is when the pump is supplied via the oil pressure switch!

Hope this helps

thanks for your help but in fact I still didn't find it :$ I found a green connector with 3 ends but I don't think that this is the good relay... are you sure of what you said about the emplacement ? maybe this is in the dash or something like that I don't know

Is the relay can be different from a conventionnel relay that we usually see ? I mean can this be a different form of relay or is it really a relay as we usually see ?

if someone can give me some tips like :

- how many wire should I see connected to this relay
- the color of the wire connected to the relay
- if the relay is in a box that I must unscrew or something like that

I searched for the relay but I didn't see one that seems to be the right one .. thx

Hi Philippe

Sorry you are not able to find it. I am only reading from the information I have, which really is not all that clear.

It may be near the Brake Master cylinder resevoir, as in the later models.

I think you should find a:-

Pink/Black wire from ignition/fuel pump fuse,
Grey from the pump,
Black-earth/ground
Dark Green/White-Fuel Pump Control from Engine Control Module
Black/white from Engine Control Module Earth/Ground
