98 2.4 timing chain replacement!
Friday, August 19, 2005 3:28 PM
I have a 98 z24 2.4 auto, 136k miles,

It started making a strange rattling noise when the engine is running, My first thought was to change the timing chain, Is that a common problem on these cars? We have had this car for about 4 years now with now problems prior to this year. In the last month i have replaced the T-stat, coils, plugs, wires?, and the white plastic coil housing. Its been a great car, I think its just getting to an age where its starting to need some tlc. So, I bought a haynes service manual for it, while reading the Timing chain replacement procedure it says to throw away the motor mount bolts and replace with new bolts, Do these bolts come in the $220 dollar timing set, if not where can i get them?Dealer? It seems to be a pretty straightforward procedure, I have a basic tools and a harmonic balancer puller, Is there anything else you guys can add before i tear into it?

Thanks

I just fixed my timing chain and put new cams in make sure you get the 3 plastic guides, the tensioner and shoe, I replaced the chain itself as well but its not necessary the reason I mention the 3 guides is that one of mine was broken in half. Also you need to replace the timing cover gaskets, if you have any interest in ever putting cams in do it now its hardly any more work than your already doing fixing the timing chain. Just make sure you are very careful getting the engine to TDC(top daed center) and dont move the crank gear once the chains off(not the end if it does happen but just easier if you dont) and to answer your first question the timing chain is a common problem on our engines while your in there change the water pump too if you already havent had to do so.

yeah I re-used them no problems there just make sure you torque things up nicely and follow the haynes maual for the torque settings.

It's recommended to replace the motor mount bolts but you can reuse them. Just use lock tite whenever you put them back in. I got my timing chain set with the tensioners, chain, gears, and the guides for $176. I got it from Advanced Auto Parts. I had to have it ordered but check it out. You'll save yourself about $50.

I've been hearing that the timing chains on our cars causes it to idle really high and rough. And I wanted to know by him changing it did the ticking/rough idling decrease any

the ticking is gone now but the idle isnt any better I put the secret cams in and the make the car sound a lil beastier. If your having a very high idle you may have a bad sensor some where. My car idles at 950rpm, but on a cold start up it sits a lil high like 1500 for a sec then drops down to the right spot but from what I hear that may be something to do with my manifold/throttle setup.

How loud was this noise? I have a loud ticking noise coming from my 2.4 right from start-up to shut-off. It doesn't seem to affect the power, but it's rather disturbing. I've been told it could be a bearing, a valve/spring or an injector. Any thoughts? It seems to be coming from the top end of the engine and there's gas in one of the cylinders/exhaust manifold ports.

Please HELP!!!

Jay W..... i have this EXACT same problem and everyone told me the same things that you said could be wrong. but it could be you timing tensioner or belt. and im gonna fix it soon since i have the money for it. it would've been fixed allready but my mechanic (my cousin lol) sister died of cancer so my car is delayed for obviouse reasons..
so once it is fixed i will post a new topic on what fixed my problem

Well, I spent all day saturday and a few hours today, but , its done. I changed the chain, tensioner, sprockets, and water pump. Now I have a small topend ticking, it is real light, Is this normal after the chain swap? I got them timed perfect, dot-to-dot, stuck the 8mm bolts in the gears, reset the tensioner, The engine idles smooth as glass!!
Another thing, I have some coolant dripping from the driver side hose inlet on the block, I never even touched that the whole time i was working on the car!!! Any Ideas?

But, the rattling noise went away thank GOD!!!!
