Fuel Efficiency Forum

Well, I posed the question a few months back if there was any interest in a Forum specifically for Fuel Efficiency / Economy.

Of course there was NOT.

Maybe NOW some would be interested ?

Just a thought.

performance forum.

if you want to get better fuel efficiency, you need to modify your car's performance. that forum's not just there for raw speed and horsepower, it can also be used to increase your gas mileage and efficiency.

if you want better fuel economy, buy premium gas, and dump it all on the ground, do an african rain dance, and then pour various herbs and spices on it.

I generally put this sort of stuff under maintenance when it's posted in General or some other inappropriate forum.

Cannon's right though. A lot of performance mods can actually help fuel efficiency as well, so long as you keep off the go pedal.

^^^ just keeping off the GO pedal helps. keep your RPMs around 2500 and you end up saving a bunch anyway.

of course, not going anywhere unless you absolutely need to works as well...

and my third "duh" tip? plan your trips...don't make tons of little trips everywhere, going hither and yon like a dyspeptic bumblebee.

yahoo, anouther forum about gas, give it up already, if you can't find the answer to your question in any other of the 45 gas treads, than your question can't be that important,
J/K, listening in on what mods could aid in gas efficiency. Don't mind me at all.

I'm with Weasel on this one...those posts belong in the Maintenance forum. Properly maintaining a car is the first and most important step to making sure it's going to get good gas mileage.

After that, listen to falnfenix (did I just say that? ) and lay off the go pedal. The typical "drive it like you stole it" attitude prevalent on JBO has to go. I've had my car for about a month now and I don't think I've gone past half throttle at all. I'm getting 30mpg, and that's with the A/C on most of the time since I got it.

Here's my hit parade for everyone to get your mileage up to par:
  • If you were dumb enough to think it would work, plug your AIT sensor back in
  • Get rid of the Warm-air/Cold air intake in favor of the stocker the engine was tuned for
  • Get rid of the "gimmick" 4 prong and exotic metal spark plugs in favor of something long-term reliable (like stock Delcos)
  • Put your stock throttle body back on. Go to the junkyard and get one if you had to core your original.
  • I don't know if J's have a "shift now" light on manuals. If they do, LISTEN TO IT.
  • Remember that, as designed, J platform vehicles are ECONOMY CARS. When driven as such, they are ECONOMICAL.
  • Make sure your air filter is clean. If not replace it (or clean it if it's a K&N type).
  • Change your oil and filter regularly.
  • Buy a case of "dry gas". Run a bottle in each tankful. This helps reduce combustion temperatures and helps to reduces detonation and carbon buildup.
  • If you removed your catalytic converter, PUT IT BACK. Like it or not, engines and exhaust systems are designed as a UNIT and backpressure (however minimal) is an important, measured part of that equation.
I know that everyone thinks they have a better way or a better idea, and in some rare cases it works out to be true. Most of the time, youre making changes to your car just for the sake of changing something or so you can SAY you modded your car. Hundreds of people with MILLIONS of dollars in R&D budgets designed these cars. They understood that one fact is inescapable in the auto business...every mpg lower and every HP lower than a competitor's car costs their company sales. If it was REALLY that easy to boost hp by 5 or 10 or 20 or to boost mileage by a few points, it would be DONE ALREADY. Get your car back to stock, or close to it, and drive it responsibly and you'll get the best mileage you're going to get. If that's not good enough it's time to look at a Metro, Insight or motorcycle. Maybe even a moped

*dons flame suit*
class dismissed.

well put jimmy. ive stopped driving like a jerk and my mpg has gone from 22 to 28. dont gun it off the line at lights, dont go bezerk passing people, and USE THE CRUISE CONTROL! thats how im coping.

however, i did test it, i got 1-2 mpg more with my WAI than with stock.

Yeah, I'd like to throw in a few caveats as well.

Letting the engine breathe better can definitely help your fuel mileage as well as giving you more power. Of course, if you USE that extra power (see earlier comments about the go pedal) then you're not going to get better mileage. But if you let it breathe better and still drive it like a granny, you should get better mileage.

You're right in that GM will increase mileage and power where they can, but they'd never sell any cars if they sold one with an intake or exhaust like most of us are running. Just as important as the mileage is the quietness of the car and most of our cars are not quiet. Things like the stock airbox are designed for noise reduction more than for efficiency.

yep, ive noticed better gas mileage with my intake, header and exhaust

3/4 ton Silverado (6 ltr v8).... Changed to 3" cat back dual exhost and a K&N FIPK intake. 2 more MPG with towing. The whole setup payed for its self in gas with a few trips cross country. But that thing is loud as hell. The tipical buyer would not buy something like that new of the lot. Btw, it gets 18 mpg without towing and 4-8 mpg while towing.

I got an '04 with an Injen intake and a duel exhaust setup. My cars a 5spd and I'm getting almost 40 mpg from it. UP from the factory rating that was with the restrictive
ass intake and exhaust.

My 02 fire auto is also getting over the factory rating on mpg. everything is stock right now except an auto interceptor. basically don't drive over 60. stay in your overdrive gear as much as possible. keep the car properly tuned. filter, plugs, wires, oil changes, and tires inflated right and you'll se major changes
