cylinder 1 misfire code
Saturday, September 10, 2005 9:42 AM
I have a 1996 Cavalier Z24.

I have searched about it and everyone seems to have differnent things. I don't want to try the "shotgun" approach and replace everything, which it seems like everyone else is doing. Does anyone have some ideas? Thanks in advance

ok well i checked the coils by ohming them out and they ohm into the range that they are supposed too. The spark plugs are gapped correctly and appear fine. i changed the fuel filter. I found the coil cover cracked (the white thing) and replaced that. i used sea foam and still it doesn't make it any better. Does anyone else have any idea what is happening? I tried using the troubleshooting section on the haynes book and still have have to look at the fuel injectors. The only other thing that i see that it could be is the ignition control module....all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

try the changing your spark plug wires first , that is going to be alot cheaper than the module , trust me !!!

MadDog, I had the same problem with my 96 Fire....turned out to be an injector ground trigger wire from the PCM to my # 2 injector had rubbed through on the chassis and shorted to ground. the injector was staying wide open, dumping fuel into the cylinder. Too much fuel, it could not spark, so it flagged a missfire... easiest way to check is to unplug the PCM harness and the plugs on the injectors, use a DMM and test for anything showing a short to ground. It just may be your problem!
