Reverse switch?
Sunday, September 18, 2005 11:28 PM
I'm guessing this is a question for the maintenance forum cuz it's electrical. The reverse lights arent always coming on in my 03 5spd Cavalier. They work about 30% of the time at best. I used to have to throw the shifter in a certain way to get the lights but now it doesn't matter how. It's a random occurance. It sounds like a switch is bad to me. Where would i be able to find this switch? Is there anything else I should check for? Thanks.

Mine quit working completely, also an '03 5 speed. The dealer replaced it at no cost, under warranty, no questions asked.

Isuzu trannys have an internal switch, could be the Getrags are the same way. P.I.T.A. setup, if you ask me!

I just replaced mine yesterday. The part was $12 from the dealer and under 5 minutes to replace. On a 95 Cavy, the back up light switch is located on top of the transaxle and you can replace it without lifting the car or removing anything if you use a 30 inch socket extension and a 22mm deep well socket. The switch is located right below the airbox, just look for the electrical wiring harness and follow it to the switch. Unplug the electrical connection, remove the old switch and replace it with the new one, adding some thread sealant (I used blue locktite) and torque to 24 ft/lbs. Very easy fix, at least on my model.

Jon

if you find post #30 in the link I gave above you will find Scott Heflin's great "How to do it"
to buy and fit a new switch. It seems to be a common problem.
