hey guys, i just have a few questions. i dot post on here like at all but i read the forums everyday.
recently I got a 03 ls sport and we are at 39,000 miles. it seems like after the 36,000 miles which is what the warranty covers everything started to start non functioning.
we fortunaltely got the extended warranty but i think either my audio cable messed something up or the alternator is going bad. here are the events that have happened in the lst week to make me think this.
rigght front headlight went out 2 days ago - replaced it
right front headlight went out again today with a new bulb
left back turn signal went out 2 weeks ago - replaced it
left back turn signal went out 3 days ago - replaced it
right power window motor went out , replaced it
driving lights went out and had to replace 2 days ago
when the wire was there before, the readings on the multimeter were going anywhere from 14 to 1 which is crazy. now that we removed the ground wire that was going to the battery, the voltage is reading at a steady 14 volts. is it possible that the wire was causing that or should i have my alternator checked out?
sorry if these are stupid questions - but i am a girl and know nothing about stuff under the hood
any responses will be appreciated =)
thanks - kacie

First off any reading from 13 .25 to 14 .5 volts is normal with the engine running. When you said that the ground was removed from the battery did you mean the negative cable with a terminal along it near the base of the battery on the battery tray?Or are you running the engine with the negative battery cable removed from the negative terminal on the battery?

Orange is bad, let me translate:
Snowball wrote:umm no, like i had an audio cable that was ground to the battery. it was a pretty big wire that was used as our audio ground cable. the battery ground is all normal, as it was before except for that the audio cable isnt attached to it anymore. it was professionally down and thats where they decided to ground it at under the hood i guess, i dno.. lol.
So as I understand it- thanks Kardain(Orange is badder for oldies) and Kacie.
There was a large audio ground connected/grounded at the Battery Negative ground point.
With this in place the 12-14volt power was erratic, not smooth, varied.
With the audio ground removed completely the power was steady and the alternator appears to be operating as it should.
Maybe the ground connection was bad before the audio ground was removed and cleaning the cable end and the chassis point it connects to enabled a good connection there.
(Even if you didn't, remaking the connection often fixes it!I
It's a good idea, though, to always clean before you reconnect.)
The alternator appears to be o.k., you could have it checked for free if necessary.
Lamp filaments will blow with a bad ground as the voltage at the filament can vary quite a bit over the designed limits.

Yes I think it was.

okay so i guess it was a relay or something that was causing all those problems, and the lights that i thought were out were actually like not blown...or something. lol im not sure. but im glad it wasnt my alternator and i decided to connect the power cable somewhere else under the hood and grounded it in a new spot. so everything is all better now. thanks so much for your replies. kacie
