my buddy actually is buying a z24 97 with 214 kms on it...
the guy selling it said the mechanic said the head gasket is gone, but the oil isnt going into the coolant.... what does this mean?
also how hard to change the gasket on this car?
could it maybe be something either than the gasket?
if your not mechanically inclined dont do it. if u dont know anything about j-bodys and their timing dont do it. if u dont know what TDC is dont do it...not be an a-hole but if u have to ask how hard it is to change a cyl head gasket just have someone do it. if ur buddy doesnt mind paying for atleast 11.5 hours of labor (number not exact but its around there. directly from a pontiac dealer repair time book but i tihnk the book used like 11.8) and for the gasket then get someone to do it. if he dont wanna pay that then dont buy the car. i paid like 1100 to get a cylinder head replaced (thats supplying the cyl head) and u have to take off the head to replace the gasket. its a lot of work and dont recommend you to try it urself.

you didnt understand the question.. first off I have a 2.2 so its nothing like the 2.4, I know what TDC is and all that.. I was basically just asking for the people with 2.4s how hard it is..... 11.5 ? ok .....he was wondering how much work hes gonna be into
obviously your buddy doesnt know how to do it. tell him to take it somewhere. you have to rip the engine all apart to get to it, its ALOT of work.
OK, to start this is a ver huge project the 2.4 is a very fast car, and i have one i blew the rodbearings in my first engine before the head gaskett, head gaskets are a pain in the ass, i can say i know alot about engines i am currently doing a 2.4 engine swap because of blowing the engine and i bould rather do the swap then a head gasket, but this could mean alot of bad things, such as
-the engine has been rodded
-not taken care off
-leaking antifreez which wouild make the engine run hot and could warp the head
ect... i would run a compression test on the engine befor buying the car it should run anrounf 180 - 200 psi if it is not equal across the cylinders dont buy it, and it dosent neccasarly have to be burning antifre. to be bad i would stay away from it if possibe thease engines have timing chains not belts, chains i think are harder to work on, most mechanics will do anything to avoid working on a quad 4

ur right halfway through i forgot it was a 2.4 but in the end ur still gonna be taking off pretty much same things. exhaust mani, intake mani, the cyl head itself. just to name a few simlpe thing. and the 11.5 hours of labor (only and estimate some place might say less time) is what ur gonna be charged in the end. thats just what i seen out of a book for 03+ eco. and like i said in the end ur gonna be taking off the same things.
seriously though man if u gonna ask how difficult its gonna be to replace a cyl head gasket i would reccomend not to do it. but then again its up to u guys.
