IAT sensor gromet
Friday, February 18, 2005 9:10 PM
OK, so tonight in installed my intake, straight off of ebay. needless to say, it wasnt an easy fit but i got it to work...mostly.

when i went to re-install my IAT sensor, i dropped the sensor and had to go buy a new one.

so i get back, sensor in hand, and it wont go through the gromet, even if i take the gromet out and try pushing it through it (though it will fit in the intake tube hole).

i end up drilling out the hold in teh gromet but the bit catches the endge and partially shreads the inside part to teh gromet. with a pocket knofe, i manage to get the assembly in the hole but its not 100% secure and i'm afraid after time that teh rest of the inside portion of teh gromet will peel off and be sucked into the intake.

any ideas what i could use for a gromet for this thing?

I had the same problem with mine on my 98, as long as you get the sensor in the air stream, you are good.

I just cut a 1/4" out of the grommet, and put it in there, otherwise any hardware store should have grommets that are a bit larger.

the problem is that the gromet/sensor assembly has a diameter that is too big, and hwn i tried to drill it out, it started to go through on the thin part, so 1/3 of the thin part is sliced. cutting the gromet will only make it worse, and i dont think i'll be able to find one with a big enough internal diameter and a small enough external diameter

Why can't you find the piece you dropped? Where did it go?

Im guess you are referring to the grommet that came with the intake as the one you mutilated?

If so try using the grommet out of the stock intake. I got a grinding bit for a drill for a auto parts store and used that to make the hole in the intake large enough for the stock grommet to fit. I suppose a dremel could be used as well. Then I employed the stock grommet and it worked like a charm.

Also on the ebay intakes getting a better cone filter, claps, and hoses would be a suggestion of mine also. All they are really good for is the pipe and elbow but thats what you need.

it finally fell out of the engine bay at warren and merriman, in garden city. i had searched for almost 2 hours before i gave up and dropped the 10 bucks for a new one. found both the sockets i dropped though.

as far as the gromet, i didnt know the stock one was removable. i dont have a dremel but i think i oculd figure something out. how big did it have to be bored out?

ok, so the grommet part of the stock intake is actually part of it; its not removable.

HOWEVER, for 1.99 at autozone i got a PCV grommet (HELP! #42058) and it fit perfect!

they use the same sensor, so good chance the grommet will be the same. it says applications are for various 1974-79 toyotas, but the HELP! pn is 42058 it poppsed right in and teh sensor slid right into it...mind you, i am useing a new wells sensor (su176)...its metal instead of my old plastic one and also a dif size.

My sensor install was pretty simple, diameter of sensor (stock) and internal diameter of grommet 1/2", externernal size of grommet 3/4", drilled hole to 3/4" inch put in grommet with out cutting it on sharp edge of intake and then popped in the sensor
The hardest part for me was finding the proper size grommet with out having to spend any money, but I found one

All you have to do is go to a hardware store and they have them in all kinds of sizes and cost about 50 cents. Just bring in your sensor and see which one fits the best.

yeah but it may not fit the tube right...you could bring both the sensor and tube in with you though...for me, i was already at autozone so it was just convenience but the hardware store is a good idea.

i think only the eco-tec has a removable groumet for the IAT

but the brass iat should be the same size , or very close to it

the 1 had from some where fit the stock intake tubing

Well I waited till i got my grommet so i knew how big to drill the hole but i guess on that one it was already pre-drilled.
