Ok i want to buy a new jbody and i am trading in my 98 sf gt witch is an auto.I dont have much experance with a stick and the pontiac dealer would not let me test drive a stick. How much faster are the sticks ad is it worth it to get a stick? How fast are the 1/4 mile times of a complesly stiped down no options auto.and same level 5 speed

5 speeds gonna win due to better gearing and if u learn to drive a standard your launch will be alot fast so that u can get your 60ft time down quicker. ive got a 2001 2200 sunfire 5sp and i stripped everything out of it no nothing and ran a 14.7 1/4 mile if that helps . but thats also with a few mods hehehe

ITS ALL FUN IN GAMES TILL SOMEONE GETS SHOT IN THE LEG

not always my friend... generally a 5spd will be faster, providing the driver can actually drive half decent. a 5spd wont do anything for you if u cant drive properly.

get the stick..

without many $$ in mods the 5-speed will generally be .5 sec faster. check the times in the members section. its about .5 sec faster on average. ive known too many people who buy an auto cuz they cant drive stick and then sell their car later cuz its not a stick and loose all they put into it. just get the stick from the start so you dont regret it later.

The dealer would'nt let you test drive the car you were interested in?
sounds like you need to go to a different dealer. But yeah here is another vote for the stick.

better gas mileage in a stick then a auto.

Go with the manual transmission, you won't regret it

Why would you want to pay $800 more to get a slower car, lower fuel economy, and an overall less involving/fun driving experience??

Good luck with getting a car, and as someone else mentioned, if the dealer won't let you test drive a car that you are seriously interested in, switch dealerships

agree with everyone thus far

auto = cost more... burn more gas... slower ... not as fun ...

std = cost less....burn less gas....faster....more fun...

heh

get the auto if you plan to do a wicked ass n20 kit.... that would MAYBE be the only positive with an auto

Do the new manuals have limited slip yet? I drove a manual and an auto when I bought mine new in 00. I wasn't at all impressed with the manuals lack of lsd. I ended up buying an auto. I run 15.7s in it. I think the auto would be a whole lot cooler if you could get a different set of plantary gears with a closer ratio. I'm at like 4500 rpms at 108 in 3rd gear. So I never even get into 4th. 1st is cool, 2nd is just ok, and 3rd really blows. I guess in the end I didn't really like either. Damn GM. Oh but it does make bracet racing easier.

None of the J's ever came with an LSD, auto or manual.

I think you should forget about which is faster when making this decision. It doesn't take much to modify an auto to make it as fast or faster than a stock manual.

Think about the driving. If you're buying the car to get from point A to point B nice and conveniently and that's about it, then get the auto. If you genuinely enjoy driving, you love cars, and the driveis every bit as important to you as getting to the destination then buy the manual.

Not knowing how to drive a manual is NOT a reason not to buy one. Find someone to teach you and you'll be able to drive on the street within an hour or two of practice. After a week you'll be fairly competent. After a month, it'll be just about second nature and then you can start actually improving on your skills and having some fun with it.

I had to teach myself how to drive a manual when I bought my first Sunfire. The sales guy took me out to give me some pointers and then I was on my own.

Unless you get stuck in heavy traffic jams, go with the 5spd. (Unbiased opinion from an auto user)

get the manual, things to rember. if u can't find them grind them. and if the car is about to stall push in the clutch. the clutch is your friend

By a few mods, you mean nitrous, correct?

just my opinion, if your going "new" like within the last 4 years (getrag standard trans.) i would go with the 5sp. however the isuzu transaxle in the older j's really blows, so i would go with a built 3sp. or 4sp. phantom grip has LSD's for pretty much every transaxle and i hear rumors about different ratios in the auto's.

Go 5 speed. I wanted my 5 speed bad enough that I actually had to skip my first color choice, since they only had them in automatics.

Hum... no lsd? Then what makes my friends 00 z24 manual only spin one tire when it burns out vs my car that spins both? She also only leaves one patch and i leave two. I just assumed it was lsd. If its not what is it?

Probably the fact that your car is a slow turd.

Sorry, can't really agree with you on this. My Isuzu tranny has had a lot less problems than a lot of people on here with the Getrag... I don't know of anyone who would actually recommend a 3 speed auto over a 5 speed manual?
