crank bearing failure and crank walk

I am post for someone else, a friend has a 97Z (98 motor)with about 50,000 on the motor. from what i understand, the crank bearing failed and let the crank move and rotate out of position. i did this less than a block from his house, he limped it home, and had it towed to a garage the next day. the garage wants to put a new engine for 4000 and a 1000 labor. even getting a rebuilt motor would be cheaper than this.

is it possible to install a new crank and bearing. i do not know what other damage may have occurred. based on feedback here i will ask for more information.

if he's even debating that kinda money, he should just buy a new cavalier lol

right!! he isn't going to have the garage do the work, the car is coming home tomorrow.
i guess the debate is new engine or replacing the crank and bearing and whatever else damaged. i know more about suspension and handling than internal parts information.

If the bearing is just spun, you maybe able to have the orginal crank machined for over sized bearings. I'm not 100% sure on this I'm not a machinest am I'm not sure if you can get over sized bears for that engine. good luck

I'll give him 800 bucks for the car as is...with the messed up/non rebuildable engine....

You should be able to find a used engine MUCH cheaper than that. My #3 went last year... Total cost on everything was under $3,000 (Cdn funds). That was with myself, and two other SJC'ers doing the swap. If you do pick up a new engine, I recommend doing giving it a new water pump, timing chain, timing chain guides & tensioner while it is out of the car. If I could do it again, I would do the cam swap at that time too.

800 bucks.... you're kidding right?
