i have a 99 2.2l...what would it take to put in a 2.2l from a 01 or 02. will it be the same or is there any diffs. will it bolt up directly? thanks for the help
if you wanted to swap, swap in an ecotec. it's not easy but there's a nice writeup of it somewhere.

wrong
2.2l 95-99
2.2LN2 (2200) 2000-2002
the differance is tiny the 2200 has a little more aggressive cam it produces 5 more hp over the previous design
dont both with it with the money u will spend on swaping u can prolly buy a rsm supercharger for it and u will be kicking a$$
2000 Dark metallica green cavalier. Actually Your wrong!
2.2L -95-97
2200- 98 and up until they used the ECO's
and the 2200 does not have 5 more HP it has 5 LESS than the 95-97 2.2L

No you are wrong on everything that you posted
The 2200 started in '98
The 2200 actually has a less aggressive cam but roller rocker ratio of 1.6:1
It would be cheaper to swap in a Eco than to supercharge it

'99 2200 LS CX1 Sport
thanks for all the replies, but you lost me. i don't want to do a supercharger or eco. i just want to take out my blown 99 2.2l and replace it with a newer less miles motor. what i wanted to know was, will the 2002 2.2l go in with out any modifications?

and also to wrap all this up...
-both 2.2L were labelled. LN2.
-2200 started in 98
-95-97 was the older 2.2L ohv rbough through from the early 90;s but upgraded a bit.
-the rockers on the 2200 were teched to be 1.54 really although listed at 1.6
and the difference in power is that the older 2.2 from 95 to 97 put out 120 HP and 130 tq
the newer 2200 put out 115 hp and 135 torque...
so basically it lost hp and gained torque over the switch.
the guy has a blown engine, so buying anything other than putting in an engine that works should be more than needed
and its a hell of alot cheaper to replace a 2200 than to swap a totally different engine as you will need the transmission, the computer, the engine, the wiring, the exhaust for that matter since the 2200 exhaust is on the front the DOHC engines have it on the rear.
granted you can do a swap for cheap, simply replacing the engine with another of the same would be the most economical situation in a hurry.
so basically for drift cavalier, all he needs to do is get the newer 2200, replace it and use all the wiring (mainly for the injectors difference) from his current car, and all should fit fine.

Actually, to clear it up even more: 2200's were sold in 2002 when the ecotecs were also sold in the LS Sports

This thread is hilarious...

the 2200 has sequential injection so it has a cam sensor, heads and manifolds are different, but you could probably get by on just the crank sensor and keep the batch fire injection (not 100% on that). the only differences i know of....oh yeah it's a lot easier to get to the coil packs on a 2200.

yes because the eco didn't come out until halfway through the model year.

holy crap, just look at the valve cover. all of the pushrod 4's are turds out of the box anyway, a 5 horsepower difference ??? you know what that is, it's + / - a bag of groceries on the passenger seat.

Well, he was swapping from a 2200 to a 2200. He should have no problem whatsoever.

The '95 2.2L were MPFI(batch fire), all '96+ are SEFI(sequential). All '96+ have cam sensors, the timing grove changed in '98 to go with the change on the crank sensor. The '98+ head, intake manifold and cam are all different from the '97 & older.
There would be no problem with this exchange.

Dude thanks for the HP tip. You think if I take out my spare tire I'll gain maybe like 8hp?
