The NEW Level Zero Stage 2 Cams for Eco
Sunday, May 29, 2005 1:31 AM
Well, a month ago I got a set of cams from Level Zero. I had ordered my cams a long time ago, but was told it would take a while for me to get them as they were working on new cams specs for the Stage 2 as the ones they currently had out were throwing codes. So yesterday I had a pro put the new cams in, car started up fine and guess what......NO CODES...ya...so far so good. At Idle you can hear the lope in the engine, sounds pretty sweet. So me and my mechanic friend decide to take the car out for a spin. Now with my other mods (check Mod list) the claimed gains from these cams should be easy to notice. However, after a good 20 minute drive I noticed absolutly NO difference in performance....I don't really know what to say. The car doesn't pull any harder then it did with the stock cams. Maybe I did somthing wrong?
Questions, Comments,HELP?

Here is a good suggestion and it's also something that I found out.

Check your air/fuel ratio.

I found that as soon as the cams were put in, my computer just started dumping a ton of fuel in my motor and I was running really rich (but no rich code was thrown).

Does your top end feel slightly sluggish?

What I did was got an SAFC-2 and took it to a dyno tuning shop and they actually told me that I was running rich not lean. They turned it down a little bit on the higher rpms but I ended "street tuning" it myself and found myself almost maxing out my safc for how much I can turn down for the fuel.

After street tuning, power was DEFENITLEY gained & gas mileage is WAY better. I just need to actually get an guage or wideband to find out if I can push it anymore lower or not, I don't want to run lean.

But overall, that's my advice to you.

and not to thread jack but I saw on your profile that you have lower compression pistons which tells me your getting ready for boost. Have you looked into seeing if those cams would be good for a boosted car? They might be too high and might be best for a stage 1 cam setup.

Well any tips would be great.

You think I can use a AFPR and lower the pressure a bit along with the knock sensor trick?

Ordered the cams, so lets see.

You could but I would suggest an SAFC. You can actually adjust how much fuel you want in whatever rpm range you want. With an A FPR you turn it down or up even for areas that might need more fuel than others or vice versa

This is more controlable, you can change it as your driving and very easy and simple to use.

Yeah I was a bit dissapointed yesterday when we took it out for a ride after I swapped his cams and he was all.. "feels the same, with a sad look on his face"

Might need some tuning, yes.
But are the cams not advertised with just "drop in cams and gain X HP" ?

What were the specs on these cams I'd like to know. Cal doesnt even know as I guess they were withholding this info for now ?

You did read the part about this being a "new grind" right, so the old info won't apply here.

That's a disapointment Cal, hopefully the ecu will figure out what's up and the car will liven up for you. Were you running regular? Maybe try a tank of premium next time, I found my car with the cams really loves premium, just a thought. We can throw it on the datalogger some night if you want, let me know.

did you reset the computer? i thought most of the guys with the first cam grind were finding as time progressed the car started to pick up a bit more?

That's true. See lucky for me, I got the cams installed the day before I went to the bash last year so I put a good 1000+ miles on the car and started feeling it much better after a period of time. When I came back home, I got into a race with a Eclipse GS stick and ripped the doors off...I was happy

I think it might just be the cams. I haven't heard many good things at all from the LZM cams. I had no gains with the first batch they made. But either way....GOOD LUCK!!!

He is running a new type of cam called TriFlows. They are not a new profile but rather a new way of doing large cams for DOHC engines.

Have you rechecked the timing? We have these cams running in four other cars problem free and all of the drivers (my self included) said they felt the gains on the first drive. I know in my car I installed the cams one time and the timing looked right but instead of the timing marks pointing to the inside of the links they were on the outside of the links. Took the car for a test drive and it felt pretty much exactly as you are describing. When I took it apart I measured the angles of the marks and it was advanced about 2 degrees on the intake and retarded 2 on the exhaust. It was simple to miss on the install becasue everything looked right except where on the chain the teeth met.

Another way to be sure of the timng is that at TDC the intake/exhaust marks is are 45* from the top of the head.

Im pretty sure we had a fixture setup so the cam gears did not move whilst installing the new cams.

It might be worth a second look, cal, once you get your engine apart/assembled.

I have all the faith in the world that the cams are timed properly, but if you had more time Cal I'd throw you on the datalogger and try to figure out what's up with you.

Well guys, I think the suggestion of running a tank or two of high octane is a really good idea. I never really considered this when Cal was in town, but it should be noted that his car threw a code the sunday nite before he left, and then monday morning she disappeared, which seemed rather odd. Either way it'd be interesting to see what sorta diagnosis you can come up with there Ian once you get him on the datalogger.

Cheers.

honestly not sure if it was a coincidence or what, but i through in some mid grade 90 octane and i can let the car idle and everything and no CEL even idles a hair smoother.

i have the JBP stage 2 cams and usually i get a CEL if it idles to long
