Federal Mogul or Clevite????
Tuesday, May 31, 2005 7:20 PM
Ok plain and simple ive been told by several people that federal mogul is a cheap brand and clevite is the way to go, ive also been told that federal mogul and clevite are the almost the same thing. Now Clevite main bearings and rod bearings are $300 versus federal mogul almost half the cost honestly which brand is better? And anyone know where I can get a high flow oil pump in the US and not Canada?

from the machine shop i visit, basically one company makes em all and they are just distributed to different names.... some have differnt extra stuff added on em.... all effective.

as seen here, fed mogul are responsible for brands that are top notch like sealed power, speed pro, MOOG, Fel-Pro etc...

still a quality choice.

basically in comparison, its like sunfire vs cavalier... on avg, the sunfire cost more than a cavalier, due to it being under pontiac. no difference.

$300 for Clevite main & rod bearings ? I could have sworn that I paid around $70-100 for the Clevite main & rod bearings for my 2.2 ohv.

I've had both. Clevite in my first engine and Speed Pro in the other.

first engine took a crap with only 8km and the bearing were so worn it wasn't even funny.

The second engine had 1600km and the bearing look like new. they still have the coating on them compared to the Clevitte that were all worn.

Honestly, I would go with speed pro again. Like you can see in my Reg, my Gtza engine is build mostly from Speed Pro/Federal Mogul parts.

It would probably be a good idea just to let the machine shop order your bearings just incase they need to turn the crank and use oversized rod bearings.

I have been using Clevite bearings for about 15,000 miles in my turbo 2.2 ohv with no problems. Curtis Walker-turbo 3.1 V6, MIke Karas-turbo 2.4, and Aasryanth-turbo 2.4 all used Clevite bearings in their engines.

melling makes pumps, but you would have to visit a local machine shop and check the catalogue...

the offer, regular, then HP (high pressure) and HV (high volume) for most applications.

I've got the Clevite.......

The JBP bearings are also coated with a special friction inhibiter....... graphite or something........ thats why they cost more.

I know this is an INSANELY old post but I feel it might be brought to the attention of the community....

I recently bought a set of Sealed power main bearings for the 2200 and found that they were not as wide (bout 1/8" narrower) across the race of the bearing on all of them with the exception of the thrust bearing. I was seriously WTF and took them back. Now I am having trouble sourcing clevites because the napa i get my parts at cost from only carries clevite till they run out and apparently now is going over to Fed Mogul. (Sealed power)

I also had a descrepency issue with Sealed power lifters. Napa sent me from the warehouse 5 clevites and 3 sealed power lifters. The clevites matched the old ones perfectly. The Sealed power, felt, looked, and operated cheaply. Even down to the retainer clip in the top of the body which only held the plunger in with two contact points instead of four like the clevites and stockers. The lifter body itself was also longer than the clevites.

Basically...Sealed power is something that I would go with in a pinch for a semi non crucial part. Otherwise I REALLY try to avoid them.

They are just dry film Treated. Fireball does it for 90 + shipping.

Avoid JBP's huge 400 $ cost .
