Valve spring compressor HELP!!!
Wednesday, June 01, 2005 10:17 PM
Alright guys anyone know of a Valve spring compressor that will fit in the Ecotec head, there is no space around that bridge that runs down the middle of the head and the valve spring itself. I've tried 2 different compressors and they just won't reach the spring down far enough to get the keeper(valve lock) on. What makes it even more difficult is that the valve keeps trying to fall down into the chamber. Is there a special GM tool they use to compress the spring.
(Just to clear up any "Why are you doing thats")
I was installing my Crane stage one Camshafts and somehow one of my rockers was off track. Well, when I dropped in the new cams it resulted in the rocker to push on the retainer or hat and pop the valve lock off the top of the valve. I think when I lifted the stock cams out, one of my cam followers came with it a little, moving it out of place. Someone Please Help!!
Travis sorry so long

Head still on the car? If so.. get an air fitting to put some compressed air into the cylinder to keep the valve in place. Then you should be able to put down on it without the valve falling into the cylinder.

I use a generic $20 spring compressor.. seems to do the trick... but without the valve falling it, it's a pain in the arse.

Craftsmen carries a Valve spring compressor that goes around the head and holds the valves if its off the block..

I used an old school C shaped valve spring compressor, but with a modified larger size spark plug socket stuck on the upper end of it. I used an angle grinder to cut a nice big window in the side of the socket, works great..
