Yes, it's true. I'm "doing my head".. lol. Just curious what parts other people are using to put their motor back together again...
I've got the GM head gasket set, with all the extra gaskets I should need.. but I won't be using the head gasket itself (just the other parts). I'm using a Fel-Pro head gasket.. I'm not decking the head, so the composite head gasket should be ok.
I have this odd mark in the head.. hopefully will be filled in by the Fel-Pro. I don't know where it came from.. but it came off the motor like that, and I can't remember if the other head has the same mark. It's just odd... looks like a backwards question mark stamped into the edge of the combustion chamber.
I got stainless steel 1mm oversize valves from Karo.. being put in the head by the machine shop as I write this.. (I hope!) I get to pick up the head tomorrow, so I'll have some pics then.
I did the port & polish myself... Standard Abrasives head porting kit $85 off Ebay..

plus my own time...
Cams are the (not so) "secret cams" once I pick up the intake cam from a friend..
Valve stem seals probably going with stock ones... seems the aftermarket ones are more expensive somehow...?!?!
Head bolts I'm going with Fel-pro bolts... I would have liked the ARP head studs, but no one around here has them and I can't wait too much longer.
The upper mount plate to block bolts... which according to the GM service manual are supposed to be replaced when you take off that plate... GM doesn't have ANY stock of.. so I'm gonna have to just re-use them with some more blue locktite.
New tensioner.. shoe.. guides.. I think that was everything... I'm starting to forget now... LOL

Sounds like you have everything. What is this about the bolts for the mount plate to block? I have never replaced those.
FU Tuning
The three bolts that hold that mounting plate over the timing chain cover. The GM service manual says something like.. "these bolts are designed to stretch when installed, and should be replaced any time the mounting plate is removed"..
I hope it was supposed to be talking about the head bolts... cuz GM doesn't have any stock (worldwide!!) on those three bolts.
Picked up the Fel-Pro head bolts today after work... $37.65 (Canadian, eh?) before taxes.. better than the $78.10 GM wanted for stock ones.
Fel-Pro valve stem seals were $100.81 for the set of 16

yeow... I think the hardware is costing me more than the whole rest of the engine upgrades!!!

Is it worthwhile to port and polish the heads?
I've never worked on a 4 valve head, but I'd imagine it would be similar to a small block 2 valve head?
I've been kind of curious to mill the head, bowl blend the heads, and throw in a ho exaust cam. Is that fel-pro head gasket you're putting in a thin one? Are you doing that to pick up compression? And if so how much do you think it will bring the compression up?
Additionally, did you have to get the head hot-tanked? and if so did you have to replace the cam bearings?
Thanks!
