how do i get rid of "death rattle" on ex

I have a '96 2.2L Cavalier that has a nice sound at open throttle but has that common "rattle" noise you find in custom exhausts. (sounds like it has pissed off bees inside!) I have a short-ram intake, OBX 4-2-1 header, y-piped dual cat-back mufflers, and temporarily a non-existent catalytic converter (replaced with a 2 1/4 straight pipe). The cat was rotted out when header was installed and I am wondering what high-flow cat would help. I need some back pressure to give it smoother starts. Any way of giving it a nice balanced sound?
