Running Really Rich
Monday, June 20, 2005 7:44 AM
i got a new exhaust put on my 04 and about two days ago I started to smoke when I get on it and when I start the engine. It smells extremely rich and I was wondering if it is gonna hurt anything and what i could possibly do about it.

Is this the end.... or is it just the beggining?

i dont think your running rich, most new exhaust sytems have a coating, the heat is just burning it off.

sorry i meant to elaberate a little. sometimes my brain stops working. but your exhaust wouldnt make you run rich, it has nothing to do with your fuel. if its not the coating burning and you are running rich its not the exhaust fault but your have a problem on hand. you could bring your car to a shop and have them pressure test your fuel system. Or look at the bright side, if you add boost or nitrous you wont run lean.

it usually takes a few days for the computer to relearn the fuel curve , when you modify something

and in some cases , someone behind you will see a small black puff when you step on it

Im not sayin that I don't like it ... I can feel a boost in power ... I just want to make sure that I don't break anything and have to take it back to chevy and have them fix something else on my car .. it already practically lives there ... ( New synchros ... twice ... then a new trans. and breaks all before 20k miles!

with the new exhaust....did you remove the 02 sensor BEHIND the catalytic converter? I ran a custom dual exhaust and removed it and my car runs like @!#$. It also throws a CEL. The ECU monitors that sensor and if it detects that it is absent then it could start dumping fuel causing you to run rich. just my 2cents.

12's......here i come

the 2nd O2 sensor doesn't affect the A/F ratio.

No ... my shop is a real stiffler about legal exhaust systems... which doesn't bother me because installation was a bitch and they got the exhaust just like i want it... (drifter style... you know cocked up and out ) anywho he would not remove the cat and o2 like I wanted him to.

lol , i had to toss the joke out there , cause you said drifter style

you will see the tip blacken some , that is normal

but the rest should adjust after some driving time

besides the oily/greasy stuff burning off which takes a few days
