Quick exhaust recommendations?
Sunday, June 05, 2005 8:31 PM
Ok guys, I'm deciding on which exhaust system I am going to purchase for my 2001 Chevy 2.4L. A friend of mine has a Greddy system in his 03 Eclipse GTS, and I like the deep sound of that. That said I am considering either Magnaflow or Borla right now. Both run for the single exhaust around 5-600$ and wonder if anyone has any experience in this. I want to get deep sound, but not too obnoxious...but I realize that a 4 banger will be a little higher pitch than a v-6...any input would be much appreciated.

dont buy a premade exhaust

this is what i paid for mine ( or will pay for 2 of the items in 2 days hehe)

these prices include shipping

rksport 4-2-1 header - 450.00
Borla Pro XS Muffler - 80.00
Dynomax Resonator - 18.00
Magnaflow hi flow cat - 60.00
Custom Mandrel Piping 2 1/4" - 150.00

so all togethor INCLUDING A HEADER i paid $758.00 .without the header its $308.00

and that exhaust system i have will blow the crap out of a premade magnaflow or borla system

and you wanna pay $600.00 for just a cat back? which only include piping from the cat back and a muffler?

If you can find a shop that will mendral bend you a 2 1/4" piping then I would say no on a pre-made cat-back system. If not, get a magnaflow or borla system.

yeah don't get pre made, it doesn't make a difference and you can have custom pipes bent for cheaper. just pick out a muffler and cat then take it to a shop thats what i did.

all your paying for when you buy a complete premade system is the chrome coated piping.

or the bends, there is nowhere within a couple hour radius from where I live that can do mandrel bends.

For some people its just as easy to pay for a premade system, if they dont know somewhere that can do the bends.

Thanks...yeah I was talking to a friend of mine recently that does custom exhausts and I can get the same grade steel that borla uses for about 350$ so I think I am going custom.

Custom made exhaust, I should have done this...... I got a catback and had to throw 18" of stainless in the trash cause I had to put a resonator. It a lot cheaper and do the same job (who care about chrome it's under the car)

Not counting the little stuff, my total cost was $338(including header) all from Summit Racing.Heres what I got for that money:

CatCo Universal Converter 2.25"in/out 13" long(CTO-6905-R) $50.69
Holley Weld-in O2 Bung(HLY-534-49) $ 5.99
2 1/4" J-bend 3.375" Radius(SUM-621007) $13.95
2 1/4" U-Bend4 1/2" Rad.(SUM-622002) $13.95
DynoMax Ultra Flow Welded 2 1/4" Off/Cent.(WLK-17217) $67.88
Thrush Magnum Glasspack 2 1/4"X35"(WLK-24211) $25.88
PaceSetter Header Painted(PSM-70-1275) $159.69

The little stuff is things like clamps(even welded you'll still need a few), haingers, paint, tip(chromed turn down, looks almost stock ) and welding supplies.

If you or someone you know can weld this is the way to go, for the cheapskate like me!Just need to cut and weld the J & U-bends according to the radius needed. I had to cut the cat flange off the down pipe of the header to fit the 35" glasspack and move the cat forward about 6" to fit everything. Welded the O2 bung to the Cat outlet flang and weded the cat directly to the glasspack. Tack it all till everthing fits properly then finish the welds and paint them.

I would recommend the Armor Coated header over the painted, but if you use the VHT High Heat Coating and prep and cure it by the directions, the painted will do okay.

The sound is deep and mellow, and very quiet, only slightly louder than stock, but flows great and looks almost stock. This with all the parts included for lees than $400, pretty good if you ask me!

BTW: this was the first time I've made anything this complex myself and I did it alone.

Just do what you can before you strip out your stock exhaust; Strip the header, cut the flange off, paint it and cure it. Weld the cat and glasspack together and drill and weld the O2 bung in then paint the welds. Don't do any cutting of the bends till you can fit the parts together under the car(on jack stands ofcourse).

It's not hard if you have any experience in parts fabrication, if you don't have someone with some experience to help.

It took me a full day(not counting the prep work) and this was by myself. Ive done similar type work at different times on racecars, but this was my first time for a full system on a street driven vehicle.
