QUICK HELP NEEDED PLEASE
Thursday, August 04, 2005 7:50 PM
Car specs: 97 Pont Sunfire GT - 2.4
Stock exhaust and manifold.

So, I was bored and I changed my spark plugs, coilpacks, air filter, and tried to do a air conditoner line flush (Detailed rant in future post) and decided to take the care out for a test drive.

Noticed that now the exhaust pops with I let off the gas. Came back read some forums on the subject and apparently it is not a big deal. <--- Please comment if this is not the case.

Anyway, so I go to dive down the freeway and I hit a bump in the road and what happens?!? My F@*(#$ Exhaust breaks off! From what I can see the pipe that comes from the manifold seperated just above that vibration limiting spring thingy ( Thats the technical term ). Doesn't look like it rusted through because there is no hole \ ragged edges.

Question One: Has any one hear of an exhaust pipe just falling off?!?

Question Two: Should I be fine to drive 5+ miles to my normal repair shop? I have heard reports that back pressure is good for an engine and lack of can actually damage it.

question 1: yeah things can vibrate loose especially if not together right or not tightened well.

question 2. the backpressure thing is a myth, the less backpressure the better...

with a naturally aspirated car, you want some backpresure. for example, taking off the cat on a nonturbo 4 cyl will drain low end torque. if you have about 10 psi working for you, then sure go open test pipe. but if not... leave a cat on.

I was a retard, and now I'm permanently banned.

I have heard of the same thing happening before, not common but has happened.
Yes you will be fine to drive 5 miles to get it fixed. The backpressure deal, is more into performance.

Thanks for the info guys!

Limped it to my normal mechanic and got it fixed. The exhaust pipe broke off right after the manifold and got everyhing from that back to the cat replaced and it purrs once again.

On a size note, I think I read a thread once that talked about cats getting clogged up and they should be replaced occationally or is it the resinator I am thinking of?
