Hey guys,
well since my gas gauge isn't reading properly i got the sending unit and going to drop the tank and replace it. BUT...was wondering if anybody has dones this fix and actually seen the sending unit being corroded?.. i'm assuming thats what gums it up and causes the false readings.
Thanks.

i can't remember how to correctly reset it. but it works. you just have to recalibrate it somehow. it will be in your Chilton's / Haynes Manual if you have one. If you don't, you should.

Some varnish building up on the sending unit is normal and can mess the readings up for the sending unit if it actually builds up thick enough over the arm or the coiled wire that the arms slids along to throw the reisistance reading off .
But I have never heard of reseting the sending unit . The sending unit is a variable resistor that is operated off of a 5 volt reference from the PCM . depending on which year J-body or other GM vehicle you have the reading should be 0 OHM's empty and 90 OHM's full for vehicles up to 1998 . Afterwards the reading go to 40 OHM's empty and 240 OHM's full
If you have to ( recalibrate ) the sending unit then it is probably bad and needs replacing .
