I could be wrong, but I think a bypass valve has something to do with keeping water from going into your engine when you have a CAI...

not sure though...

Basically, If you have a CIA and drive through a puddle deep enough (About a foot deep or more) your intake could feasibly be totally submerged and only be sucking up water. The By-pass valve would then allow air in at it instead because the suction pressure to suck up the water would be higher than what the valve is set at. AEM also sells one specifically for their CAI. They said it make reduce your HP by about 2. Of course, you could just avoid the deep puddles.......

yeah its an air intake bypass. when your filter gets wet it makes it harder for air to get through, with this installed it will bypass your filter and just take the air from where it's located. Most bypass filter are usually located closer to the throttle body that way air is pulled quicker. they're good to have when u have CAI that relocate your filter inside the fender well. go for it.....

you really only need one if you have an intake that extends into your fender well. you can see my custom setup in my registry profile. with my car dropped, the filter sits about 6 inches from the ground and i have never had any problems with water getting to the filter.

basically if anyone had the chance to read the tests that were done in sport compact car when they put the filter in a fishtank and turned on the car....

it only works when FULLY submerged...

kinda like the idiots you see on the news or amazing videos where their car or pickup is stuck in the middle of the road cause the water came over the road or bridge....

valves only open when the complete filter is submerged, and if that occurs, you already have more issues than water in your intake...

Actually, i heard of that happening to a Civic that this guy I work with has. He had a CAI, and somehow sucked up so much water that it did indeed blow his engine, IMO i would recommend it if you have a CAI that went into the fender well, for the J's IIRC only the ECOTEC motor has a CAI ATM. Most J Tuners use a Short Ram Air Intake, which is said to do about the same performance wise.

if water gets in it doesn't exactly "blow your engine". it's called hydrolock. some water can enter your throttle body and will almost instantly evaporate due to heat. however, if enough gets in there, it enters your combustion chambers... and we all know that water does not compress or combust. Therefore, hydrolock. No more motor.
