new intake, losing mileage?
Tuesday, August 09, 2005 10:35 PM
ok, i installed a weapon r intake a few weeks ago, thinking i might free up a couple hp and torque, and make space for a strut tower bar, since i guess the factory air box gets in the way. since that time, i've lost about 4-5 mpg it seems. i used to drive about 320mi before filling up, now i'm lucky if i can get to 300 without the "check gauges" light coming on. i assumed i may lose 1 mpg or so at the most, but ads say it will increase gas mileage. did i get something wrong? i'm sure i hooked it all up right, except the hose for the breather thing was a few inches too short, so i had to rig it up to use the factory hose along with the one that came with the kit til i get a filter for it (if i keep the intake). Is there a break-in time for the computer to learn there's more air flow? i haven't changed my driving habits much at all with it. any help or reasons are appreciated.

you shouldn't be losing a noticable amount of MPG with just an intake. buy a different filter, such as an authentic K&N, possibly your o2 sensor... who knows.

could be due to the o2 sensor. with the weapon-r intakes its not right in the tube. its in a hose connected to it. try to get it as close to the intake tube as possible. i have the weapon-r dragon intake on my 2200. i didn't lose any mileage. i get between 28-30 mpg. i didn't hook up the hose to the valve cover though. just used breather filters.

put the iat in the intake tube if it isnt already there.

sometimes people tend to drive a little harder to hear their intake....is that possible?

That would be my guess to everyone loves hearing their new intake when they first get it and cant stop punching it hard resulting in decreased gas mileage.

yeah, iat sensor, NOT o2 sensor. o2 sensors are in exhaust stream.

like i said, i don't think i've changed my driving habits much, at least not enough to warrant that much gas loss. the iat is in a little rubber grommet that came installed in the tube. i would assume it's in direct airflow. could i have damaged it from moving it around when installing the new intake? what about a possible slight restriction in the tube for the valve cover? i guess i'll continue driving it, maybe pick up a breather filter to rule that one out, and see what happens. thanks for the help.

the breather valve on the cover which goes to the hose only recirculated oil fumes mainly and also keeps crank case pressures low, which in turn will keep pressure off the rings.

breahter filter will keep the intake tract cleaner.

although like said above, small change in driving habits can change a good deal. might just be something you do without notice. if you find yourself smashing the gas when you had the restrictive setup, doing the same will burn more gas now.

also remember your regular maintaiance, fuel injector cleaner, oil change on time, etc... all of that adds up to efficiency which can effect gas mileage.

also read your sparkplugs, they can tell you ALOT.

dont know how to read em, visit densoiridium.com and check out the sparkplug FAQ there.

yea i know this. i always specify IAT / o2. however, when he was mentioning bad gas mileage... i know faulty o2 sensors are a culprit of that very often.

hmmmm can we have a bad o2 sensor but not have a check engine light? mine pops on once a month for a few mins and thats it....an i only get 400k to the tank...phil

I'll give you a tip, get that Weapon R foam air filter off the car and put a authentic K&N filter. Over at BITOG weapon R type foam filters do not do the job, decrease engine oil life (only 2 ways to get contaminants in your engine, #1 is through the air intake and #2 is combustion by product.) There is a reason why automotive manufacturer's use an air box and a paper filter, because it provides near perfect filtration.

Either get a paper cone filter, or a K&N cone.

absolutely. the probe might not be "faulty" but may be weak and not reading properly.
