2200 Head work, not jusr p&p
Friday, August 19, 2005 12:50 AM
Im just looking for some general info on this, I plan on porting and polishing a 2200 head and I'm looking to do an agressive one at that. Now, I do have crane rockers and pushrods and plan to add oem sized stainless valves. the question is do I have to replace the springs and retainers or anything else? I dont plan on taking this motor into boost anytime soon, maybe a 50shot at best.

any input on this at all? basicly will the stock springs and retainers be ok with me using the crane rockers/pushrods and stainless valves?

I would think the springs and retainers would be an important peice to replace on the head. I say go for it since you'll have the head off.

By the way, I thought you were going for the Auto ECOTEC swap?

You shouldnt have to replace the valve springs just because you are getting the head ported, unless someone has proven that the stock springs are crap. I have a ported head with the stock springs and retainers. It would be a different story if you were putting a cam in there.

Adler are you still using the stock cam? I checked your reg really quick and didnt find a cam in the mods list.

you dont have to,

HOWEVER.... this is just something personal with myself.... if its cheap, replace it...

valve springs are like 7 a piece.

retainers are like a 4$ a piece if that....

heat degrades metal over time.... it can also strengthen it, but it can also weaken it...

better to replace now, if the engine has some miles on it, than to wonder later.

you can....

get lighter parts... shaves grams off the weight needed to be moved by the entire moving assembly and cam....

will it help? yes....

noticeable..... questionable....for some...yea.......others not much

thats if you are talking titanium retainers etc....

I'd keep buying stuff and install it all at the same time. Also it wouldn't be that big of a thing since as Event said, it would be a cheap buy. It wouldn't neccesarily hurt you!

I know I heard somewhere that repacing the springs in the head with stronger units supports a higher revving engine! I don't know if you'd ever go stand-alone and kill your rev limiter but that would be something to think about! Also I would install a cam eventually which would warrant replacing the springs, retainers, etc.

if you really want to do it right have them install new seats and guides. because when they cut the stock seats it sets the valve up in the head more hurting flow by shrouding the valve. then maybe look into having them back cut the new valves and a good 5 angle valve job. new springs and retainers are a no brainier. new springs because they do compress over time. and if that is the case them the shop would have to shim the snot out of them to get the install hight and seat pressures right. them you stand the chance of valve float at higher rpm because those springs are tired. ok i will stop there.

see ya!
