Ordered up my crane rockers got them on wednesday started the install today... the studs don't fit into the block... wtf gives I thought this was specifically made for the 98+ 2200?

should I call howell? did they ship me the wrong studs or am I just F'd and have to buy studs that'll fit...

anyone have part numbers? the holes are 3/8 and the stud on the head part is definetly not 3/8

on the baggie it says 10mm for the studs

shouldn't they be 8mm?

they DEFINETLY don't fit into the head

are there any number prints on the studs themselves?

Re: did i miss something?

also do the rockers even fit on em?

Re: did i miss something?

the rockers fit on the studs, the poly locks fit on the studs, and the allen lock things fit in the poly locks, but the studs dont fit the head at all

I don't have the studs in front of me but I'm pretty sure there's no numbers printed on them...

on the lil baggies I forget the thread, but it says x 10mm

I'm pretty sure the newer OHV is 8mm isn't it?

definetly no markings on the studs

on the bag it says

99148-2

Rocker Arm Studs
10mm bottom 3/8

Crane Cams, INC

the bottoms are too big for the head... this sucks I have to wait until mondy to call them to straighten it all out I was hoping to get them in by the weekend... <aggrevated>

any input on this event? Anyone? does howell have the right studs? can i get them from jegs???

i also got sent 2 diff studs as well! one have a very course thread at the bottom and alot more thread at the top than the other 6

Is the 98 head that howell used to make the kit a diff stud size than the 2k up?

K just realized something! My casting number on the head under the rocker cover ends in a 146. I replaced a valve cover gasket for a buddy with a 98 2200 and the casting number was NOT the same! So im betting its safe to assume that when howell did these up he used a 98 2200 with a 10mm studd, At somepoint around 2k it mush have changed to an 8mm?

Ok so I know it seems like I'm talking to myself but this is my research and I want it here so anyone who wants to can follow. I have to thank my buddy Ryan for having a leaking valve cover gasket

The 2200 started first in 98 and an imporvement over the older 2.2's, most of the changes were in the head. Well with 98 being the first year of changes to this motor it must of went through some stages. In this case lind like software for computers is documented in 1.0 and when an upgrade arises that is not a dramatic change it is labeled 1.1 ect. Same with the new 2200 head.

When howellautomotive built there rocker kit they used a 98 cavalier! I noticed when changing ryans gasket in his 98 that the casting number was diff than mine, I looked further and found a head from a 99 had the same casting number as mine. i think that the first year 2200 used a 10mm rocker stud that was replaced with an 8mm stud in 99+. hence the reason i recived a 10mm stud.

but kinda odd that no one has complained about this, not like the only people with them have 98 j-bodys.

the new casting ends in 146, no clue on the 98 casting number.

The narrow body rockers were originally used on the LT4 Chevy Corvette The studs for that engine are 10mm lower.

only prob with the 98 head theory, the car i installed these in, were a 2000 cavalier (bubbleguts) look him up...donovan beeman. http://www.j-body.org/members/vacav/

the head that i got done for the new engine was a 2001. studs fit the head, had to for mockup build of the engine at the shop.

i bought 2 sets at one time,

ne question.. right now i cant measure it... have to run to home depot....

but is the smaller threaded part that goes into the head, SMALLER than the top where the stud goes?

also, phlat, those pushrods are badarse arent they? i still have the test set in my car right now

Ok, I just got back from the junk yard and yes the 98 head is diff from the 99+. I got one off a 2001 so now I can start the port and polish stage .

Now the studs on the 99+ 2200 IS 8mm...take a look.

dont worry I only placed them on there for the pic, I did not try and force them

Oh and that head is nasty will it hurt it if i pressure wash it, making my room smell bad

and event, i compared the stock pushrods to the Crane ones...ooohhhh yeeaaa

spray it up with some Gunk engine degreaser, let it soak and then you can hit it with a hose or powerwash it. Or you can get a machine shop to do one of those fancy steam-clean chemical bath thingys.

Oh and my luck gets worse!!! That head I got at the junkyard today, well I just removed the plugs only to find that 1 of them was diff from the other 3. Long story short it looks like some one must have stripped it out and fixed the situation by adding a bigger plug so now a stock sized plug just falls right in!!! Can a machine shop fix this problem? I need to know fast cuz after 7 days i can not return the head.

they might, but if i were you i'd just return it. why try to fix something like that if you have the option of returning it for one that isn't all crapped up?
