What do we know about the 2.0 Eco?
Friday, August 19, 2005 11:25 PM
with tuning options popping up recently its brings to mind the option of swapping in the 2.0 eco in a J. All tuning aside what differences do we know will be issues with the swap. obviosly the 2.2 eco tb will need to be kept. keep in mind i am thinking turbo on the 2.0 eco from the start. i do believe the mounts are the same but that will need to be 100% sure. i also heard the 2.0 motors may use a different p/s setup. this may just require towers from the 2.2 be swapped on. anyone poke around one of these yet? if so please chime in.

I beleive this will install like any other j-body motor...you'll need the PCM, Tranny, Wiring...the fuel system you might need and ignition system might be the same also.

2.0 motor swapping is still somewhat of a mystery because no one has really done it on here.

The 2.0 motor would be good because it has better pistons & rods and is 9:1 compression...I say go for it, especially if your 2.4 motor is at high mileage.

Well the reason I say take the computer is because it's programmed to have boost on it (like how the 2.2 would need a reflash, they already have it programmed).

Like said...some of the other stuff could fit...who knows...no one has really done it on here yet so we don't really have any details on it, like if the tranny, wiring, ignition system needs to be swapped but to play it safe, I would swap them over.

well a nice big fat peorian tree decided to hop on my Z so id have to get another one. im thinking roughly the same year and stuff. liked the car a bunch. anyway im thinking the eco f23 trans swap and 2.0 eco. heres my plan as of now. if i can get a cheap 02 ls sport i might hop on it but prolly a 97-99 Z 5-speed. prefer a cheap dead engine one. swap in the 2.0 and f23 and turbo it. sell the s/c to off set some of the swap cost. a swap from a 2.4 to a 2.0 will have even more to think about though. the way to do it i think would be to retain all stock wiring and injectors (if they physically fit) but run a msd and wires for ignition. get the ecu flashed to run timing off the crank and fire in batch mode (2.4 w/o cam sensor mode). the use HPT or an eic system to tune from there. i was thinking about this same principle for a HO swap but there really isnt a reason this cant work for a 2.0 eco either. plus your right with forged pistons, rods and crank stock.. hell why build one. just my .02 though. although HPT and a 2.2 eco cav the swap should be rather straightforward though i think. im just wondering about any querks and differences between the 2.0 and the 2.2 ecos.

thanks guys for your inputs!

if you swap in a pre 2000 your going to have to swap the internal wiring, gauge cluster, BCM. with a 2000+ all you would be swapping is engine bay stuff.

info per Suncavi, and others.

1. you have to swap the 2.2 oil pan onto the 2.0 motor(lower motor mount brakcet will only attach to the 2.2 one)

2. swap over the aluminum bracket for the upper motor mount(where upper mount attached to the head....requires a lil bracket

3. the 2.4 power sterring pump will work w/. no mods on the intake cam.

4. a custom plate to block off the seal off the exhaust cam

the f23 getrag 5 speed will bolt up
as will the auto

and it will be in.....you may get lucky w/out transfering the pcm beaxcuse the 2 harness are similar

dont ask me how i know

the goal of this project is to run the 2.0 on the 2.4 wiring, pcm, gauges.. etc. needed will be a custom tune of course and ways around some of the problems i mentioned in previous posts (cam position sensor is one biggy). i was wondering about physical problems such as many Snowman just covered.

what if its going in an eco? i might have a good deal on one, and it would save me a bit of money instead of going with aftermarket forged internals. i dont plan on ever making above 300ish whp. not in my cavalier anyway.

his differences are mostly for 2.2 to 2.0 differences which are few. you will basically swap it in and tune.
