I know this may be a newb question.... But how come when I rev my engine it makes a "pop" or a small backfire sound around about 4k rpms? How do I stop it from doing that? I have an auto 03 eco... The only mods I have are a CAI and cat back exhaust....
is it doing this while the engine is revving up or coming down in RPM's?
It also does it a little as it is coming down in rpms.... It's more of a "bubbling" then. I mean, if I just put it in park (or neutral) and rev the engine it does it as soon as it hits a certain point (between 3k & 4k rpms)....
Correction. I see that this is called the "rev limiter". I also see that no one wants to give tips on how to disable this b/c "Quote: I don't know enough about my car...." I would appreciate any tips or just a flat out explanation about WHY it does this. How can we learn when no one wants to teach us.... ?
between 3k and 4k rpms you're no where near the rev limiter, the limiter on these cars from the manufacturer is somewhere around 6300 i believe. The popping sound you're hearing as the rpms are coming down is normal, I haven't heard a car with an exhaust that didn't really have the bubbling sound. As far as revving up and having a pop sound, that's a sign that you're having detonation possibly. How many miles are on the car?
I probably was off in my rpms.... I can't go outside & crank up so I couldn't remember where it does this... I believe mine does it before 6300 but I'm not sure.... I have about 78k miles on it.... (yeah, I've been ridin)
if it's around there, then more than likely it's the rev limiter. The rev limiter isn't what everyone is hush hush about, it's the speed governer/limiter that everyone is on the dl about.
To up you're rev limiter you'd have to get something like an MSD II ignition or piggyback system, not sure if you could have the computer reflashed to up the rpms but you might be able to. But before all that, you'd want to upgrade the valvetrain with some better springs and lifters and get a cam that will benefit from the higher revs.
1: Where can I find such cams & for how much?
2: Where could I find that MSD II ignition and how much?
3: What exactly would I need in detail to up my revs without doing harm to my engine?

take your engine out your car or simply get a resonator... read the FAQ, theres a whole section on this since many dont know.
gas engines pop when you let off the gas....its unburnt fuel.
in park, the car is limited to 3-4 k
msds dont do anything for the revlimiter...
when you add an msd, the lowest rev limit will be used, which is used by the controlled by the ecu... MSD DOES NOT UP REV LIMITS....
computer reflash you can do this...
I'm kind of new to this so could you explain to me what computer reflashing is? Where could I get a resonator to add on to my existing exhaust system?
think of reflashing a computer like rebooting a computer and rewritting the codes inside....
replacing chips like on other cars, would be like changing the disc to the comp...
reflashing is like when you go into bios on the comp on startup and make your own preferences...
in a nut shell.
resonators... any exhaust shop.
if you are new still....

read that post.... alot of the stuff you have asked, are thinking about asking, or will ask are definately in there. it will give you a base to all of the lingo and limitations you can do.
for exhaust building or modifying, read this link

that should get you started decently. always check the top/first post in most forums... chances are, if its a common question, its in that post
Thanks!!! You are my hero... lol
