Hi Guys
I need to know what heads will work on a 1997 sunfire 2.2

the LN2 head... or you can buy "aftermarket" PnP patriot heads, heads from JBP, Mantapart, and RSM. Or you can just take your head to a machine shop that does porting and have it ported and polished.

can i use a cavalier head off a 1997 cavy or not?

Its the same engine (I think I told you that on V6Z24.com when you asked about brakes if you're over there too). Any head from any 2.2 will bolt up, as will heads from older 2.0 OHVs, and the 2200 head. Not all of them are good choices though, depending on what your plans are. Check the library at
www.ny-jbodies.org for the 2.2 history article for more info.
so i can take any head off from 94 to 1997 from a cavalier or sunfire

I believe that's what James is trying to say...

as long as it is from the same engine

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
the older 2.2;s range from the second gen into the 95-97 3rd gens... so any of those year engines really would be your safest bet.
Yes, any year from 92-97 will work. Read the article in the link I provided. There are several slight differences in heads, especially if its a factory head (heater/coolant ports, threaded holes, etc).
the 2200 head will not bolt up perfectly, it requires modification

What kind of modification? I had always read that they were close and might work with modification. Do you know what needs to be done?

Since when? I know a few people who have used it with no problems. The accessory/tensioner bracket is different, as well as the intake/exhaust ports, but thats all I know of. From what I've been told and have seen, the head bolt pattern is the same.
i always heard just the opposite. that it wouldn't work right.

I tried converting my 95 2.2 into a 2200, but fell short of a set of rocker studs that were for the 2.2 head. I have pics of it during assembly and near final assembly. I regret trying to make it work, but at least I know it works using the correct parts

hence why rockers are different for 2.2 and 2200

Hence why someone sent me 10mm studs instead of 8mm studs for a rocker kit that is supposed to fit 98-02 2200's!
By the way, if anyone wants a set of CraneCams 2200 pushrods and/or their gold race aluminum rockers, let me know.

how much for pushrods and how much for rockers?

So, the 200 head does work on a 95-97 block?! then why doesn't everyone that wants to get ride of these god forsaken side feed injectors just get a 2200 cylinder head. and intake manifold? and throttle body. Is that what u did Bigrey. Did that work other then the rocker? Oh, the pushrods are slightly different lengths too right? Please, info. This might be a good solution to put top feed injectors on a 95-97.
The coolant hoses are also different on the 95-97 and 2200 motors.

dont do it, in my older cav they put a 2200 block with a 2.2 head. did not work at all. well the car ran for like 3 weeks with a ticking noise. until it died, i found a broken piston. apparently, the timing is different in the 2.2 amd 2200, so it doesnt work. at least it didnt work with me.

I saw a cool set of blue coolant hoses from OBX on ebay when I was looking up headers last night... i laughed when I saw them

well i guess the 92 gots a bigger valve stem size vs the 93 to 94-97 valve stem the 92's gots a 8mm and the 93 to 94-97 haves the 7mm valve stem.

Ya, i know about the different valve stem sizes, but u can change the valve guides to fix that, if u wanted. I once got one of those heads for my 95, and my 7mm valves didn't fit. have to get different valve guides.
So, Why doesn't this work again? are the coolent ports in the head itself different? i know you'd have to run new coolent hoses, etc. but, the ports from the head to the block, do they match. The timing is all done in the block. so, i don't see how that could be a problem.
Anyone have opinions?
