my 2.2 died the other day and i was just wondering what is a good engine to swap with it ??
2.4, ecotec or the 3800 supercharged
i would swap it for the 3.9 vvt but i don't think you want to spend $4000 for a motor that i don't think is out as a crate motor yet.
my personal opinion would have to be either the Ecotec and then Boost it or the 3.8S/C from a GTP/Regal GS/ Riviera.
And if you cant afford either of the engines above, then put the 2.4 LD9 in there..

2.4 LD9 would be more cost effective. Same engine harness, same mounts. All you need is the motor / tranny, the PCM, and the harness that goes from the PCM to the box on the firewall.

if you have the money, DEFINITELY get this one

towards the middle of the page
this is where i am getting my exhaust as well
uhhh...i wouldnt do that..not personally..they are charging over 9,000 for that engine..i asked

...but on the subject i dont see why you would recommend a ld9 over a HO or w41...i mean..i COMPLETLY understand if thats what you had to start with and wanted to stay with it..but you dont...so ofcourse once again My opinion is if your gonna swap a differnt engine in..go with a quad....
ps.. i am also curious as to how much better the 3800 swap is compared to this but ill debate this in another post tonight..so maybe someone can help me out..notthat im putting it down..i just want to knowthe power AND finacial differnces

I would go also with a w41 or HO quad 4. You will start right out with 180 hp with that HO quad 4 and have alot of options to do @!#$ with it,
If you do go the route of the HO or W41, make sure and do aftermarket head gasket and water pump. Because... yea they are horrible.

If i were going to do a swap from my 2200 to a Twin cam motor, i would get one of the 190hp W41 engines from Mantapart, 3 grand for a complete brand new engine is a pretty good deal if you ask me.
Im not sure off the top of myhead what the CR is on thise engines, although i woudl imagine pretty high, so i would put lower CR pistons in it, say 8.5 or 9.0:1 and then put a turbo on it, and would probably try and run the engine using a stock 2.4 program or a reflashed S/C progrm till the HP tuners thing came out, which would be much cheaper than going with a stand alone system.

Or, i would just leave the CR stock on the W41 and put in forged pistons and rods, myabe port the head alittle bit, and then do a direct port N2O system running a 125 shot, and with the proper drivetrain and traction that would be as fast if not faster than Karos 2.4.

ok...3grande for a brand new w41 isnt a great deal...i mean sure its brand new but since your talking about changing the pistons and rods anyway theres really no reason to get a New one..especially since a used one is soooo much cheaper

Well i dont know about you, but a used W41 engine is just about impossible the find around my part of the country.
Im on ebay alot, and have never seen one on there for sale either, so id say given that, the brand new one for 3g's woudl be the best way to get one, atleast them you know your getting what you pay for.
And that cant be said if your trying to piece one together from parts, piece by piece, and then you find out you have HO cams instead of W41, or something like that.
I personally want to to a turbo 3400 swap into my cavy one day. Probably will once i blow up the 2200.

you can get REAL W41 cams for 350$ from Josh at TRS. You can get some .410" lift and 226° duration cams from Comp Cams.
So if you take that 3000$ that you would take for the W41 and use it for the Ho with W41 cams, you can mod it alot more than what you say and be 5 times faster.
If you take that 3g and build a 2.6L with forged internals and nitrous, you would kill the W41 like nothing. It would be about the same price but you would get better power and a torque curve alot better.

2.3 Ho
3800 ss supercharge. you'll run 12s at least i hear
theres that ss again...thats a SuperSaiyan 3800 right? i agree with gilles..3000$ is alot and your making it out to be more than it is..get a HO for a good 1k..then you got 2k to buy the cams and internals and nitrous..BAM a BADASS ENGINE...now i agree the 3800 is probably the best swap..as far as power.and the quad will probably be the best swap as far as finacial...that sound about right?

I know I'm coming in this topic kind of late but I just wanted to say this...
There really is no best engine, it all comes down to what kind of power gains you want, how much money you're willing spend/invest, what your future plans are for that motor etc.

Yeah which is why i finally decided to just build the 2200 and show the world what you can do with a properly tuned, and boosted "old school" pushrod motor.
If i were to do it all over again, not having bought anything yet, i would do the V6 swap for sure, and most likely it would be the 3.8 S/C engine, you can get some serious power out of one of those engines, and they are pretty reliable also.

yea they run 10:1 compression stock.

not sure if it was said but go to
Engine depot and get the Cobalt SS engine and fab up some mounts and such and get all the other stuff and make that work
The First Twin Charged jbody
blue car (R.I.P) - 240whp @7psi..
silver car - 305whp 315lbs.tq @15psi (91 Octane) or 420whp & 425lbs.TQ @20psi (94 octane+Alcohol Injection)
All dynos run on a Mustang dyno
yea ..well..theres another debate ..which personally i dont see reasonable cus my quad is putting out more N/A power than the sscobalt and was much cheaper for me to put in...all other engines aside..no one has doen the sc 2.0 swap yet..and i see why..thats a pretty good lot a work for not that much power...before you get me wrong what i mean is...it would be CHEAPER and JUST AS POWERFUL to just spend the money on a supercharger for your existing engine..right? there really isnt a GOOD reason for any Jbody to invest that much in a 2.0 and all the work to make it fit ..when they can reach the same goal probably with a 2.2 eco simply by supercharging or turbocharging IT....am i right????

Very interesting thread.
I've read some engines were better considering money vs power, but how about weight vs power? Are there any lightweight engines with 200+hp (stock or boosted) that can be pushed pretty hard without falling apart like my stock 2.2?

Well it's a given that when you get a bigger engine it's going to be heavier. You could pretty much boost any of our 4 cylinder motors and not increase weight much.
