when your installing roller rockers do you have to pull the head off the block or can they be installed with it under the hood? how or what does the push rod guide look like ? thanks in advance.

the pushrod guide plate is underneath the rocker studs.

so when you pull the old rockers off, pull the old studs out (cause you dont need them)
and open up the guide plate hole a bit (that guides the pushrod)

do yourself a favour and get new pushrods too.

also when you're setting them up, gently tighten each rocker at TDC compression until you feel a drag on the pushrod as you spin it (only a slight drag) then set you preload to about half a turn more.

thanks but how do you open up the pushrod guide ? i have a dremal and acarbide cutter but what about all the metal shardes ? how do you catch them from going down into the engine ? so when your adjusting them you say to go past the point to where the pushrods wont turn by half a turn . then what do you do to adjust tehm ? thanks

you don't have to do any guide work for the 95-97 2.2 Comp Cams rockers. I checked your reg to see which ones you were installing but no information is filled out.

i have the 95-97 2.2L LN2 comp cam roller rockers but im trying to install them on a 2001 2200. i think that i need to shave a little off the guide because it looks to me that the rod is going to barely tuch the side of the guide when the rods is fully extended out. what would you do to catch the shavings?

ahhhhhhhh... yea i don't see that working the best. different length pushrods and all sorts of stuff. best of luck to ya though.

they donthave different length pushrods . i had the damm things on today and i would of tried to start it up but i wasnt sure if the damm rod was touching the guide or not so i figured that i would get on here and try to find out if anyone new of a way to grind down part of the guide without getting the shavings into the block. i just dont wanna have to take the head off just to grind 1/16" off of the guides . that would be a waist of time . stevewire , how did you go about opening the guides up without getting anything into the block?

you have to pull the rocker studs out of the head when you change to the comp cam roller rockers, because they require a different stud.

did you get the new stud with the rocker set?

If you did, pull the old studs out, and when you do that, pull the guide plates off as well (they're held on by the studs)

Open it up another 30% or so (just a guess) and you'll be fine.

and yea I used a dremel.

dont need to pull the head to do this.

the guide plates are right there when you lift the valve cover off

I opened my guide plate with a dremel. If you're worrying about getting shavings in the engine just lay rags down over any openings and use a shop vac to suck up what you can. Just remember to relube any parts that get dried out. Even an eithth of an inch is more than enough. Use standard pushrods and if you didn't get the studs, go to the local dealership and get M10 adjustable studs for a 2.8 V6. If they ask what car tell them '89 Corsica, and that should do the trick. You need those because the rochers you're using are made for a 3/8" stud, the studs in our cars are 10mm. And get poly locks for the studs. I didn't and I had to do valve lash adjustments every weekend for over a month. I put the poly locks on and no troubles. The preload is a good trick, but you can do an old school valve lash by capping the oilers, starting the engine, and tightening each rocker one at a time until they stop rattling, then give them a quarter turn or so and you're set.

thanks , what do the guides look like because i think that im thinking of the wrong thing? i thought the guides where the holes that the rods went through . do i need to use the square part that is underneath the old rockers ? or are they just what gm used so that you wouldnt have to adjust the valve lash? and how do you get the guides out? thanks

Yes, you do.

You remove the rocker arms, then remove the studs. The plates will come right off.

Also read this info and this How To.

ok thanks . is that a picture of a 2200 or of a 2.2L Ln2? im trying to install these rockers onto a 2200. there isnt a pushrod guide plate so i guess i dont have to worry about it ?.?. do you have to modify the hole under that is in the head under the guide plate? even in your picture it looks like the push rod is very close to the side of that hole. thanks agaiin

hmm...I didn't touch the guide plates when I put my comp cams rockers in

Also, hotfire, you're not looking at the pushrod guides, you're looking at the lifter guides. Don't worry about those.

Thats a 2.2 head. If the 2200 head doesn't have plates, then you shouldn't have to worry about them. Just like OHV said, you don't have to do anything with the holes.

I had to take about 1/16-1/8" off my plates. This is the first I've heard of anyone not needing to clearance them just a bit with the Comp Cams.

Re: roller rockers

how about when I changed the studs over for the comp cams rockers one of my factory studs was forced into hole and cross threaded. from the factory!! I couldn't believe it.

so that mod cost me another $70 for the damn heli-coil set.

ok so i got them installed and went for a drive. problem is that the rockers keep sliding off the valve stem that sticks out of the spring. could i get the guide plates for the 2.2L Ln2 and put them on my 2200 or do they make guide plates for the 2200? is there something that im doing wrong that is making them slide off ?

The 2200 requires the self-guided rocker arms, the same as all '87+ small blocks.

If you can weld(or someone who can) HotRodV6 did in this post. Just read through till you find what he did.
