Trouble with stock bored TB...Need help
Tuesday, October 11, 2005 5:15 AM
I finally got my T/B back from the machine shop...it's a stocker bored to 56mm with a new butterfly...so i bolt it up and hook everthing back up besides the intake and the IAT (b/c it's on the intake)....i start it up and it wont idle right. The RPM's jump from 1300 to 1800 and just keep going up and down, up and down.

So i shut the car off and put the intake on, hook up the IAT, and restart the car. Idle comes down pretty good, around 1200-1400 and stays decently steady, jumping just a little between those RPM's...so i'm thinking "good, all i have to do is adjust the idle down a bit...i'll worry about that in a little". So i let it warm up, and i blip the throttle, it revs, then falls back down like a rock, then jumps back up to around 1800, then settles back down to 1200-1400.

I go ahead and take it for a ride. I go to shift gears and almost as soon as i push the clutch in, the RPM's fall like a ROCK, then jump back up to around 1700-1800, all as i'm letting out on the clutch...Also, as i come to a stop and push the clutch in to coast, the RPM's jump from 1300-1800, and just keeps on doing that until I come to a complete stop. As soon as i come to a complete stop, it stops going up and down and idles at 1200-1300. Thats what is REALLY puzzling me.

I got back home this morning and checked the codes...it's throwing P0507: Idle Control System RPM High. That has me thinking that it's the IAC. I looked at the IAC when i had it apart to have it bored. Looked alright to me, just dirty, so i cleaned it up. The TPS seemed to have a lot of play on it (in the place in the middle where the rod is keyed onto). Not sure how much play it's supposed to have, if any.

Thanks for bearing with me...Any help would be appreciated.

sounds like the TB was bored out just a hair off center, and that's allowing too much air around the butterfly.

About 2 years ago Nitro was selling TB's he bored out at work, and had the same problem with one he accidently bored out off center.

I personally have a 60mm TB on my eco, and when warm, it idles at 900 - 950 RPM, which is where it idled stock.

of course you should check for the usual suspects. if your TB isn't centered then perhaps it could be a minor vacuum leak, you should give it a few light revs while you're under the engine and see if you're getting any odd whistling noises.

also check the IAC, have you already tried resetting it? you can do that by killing the battery for a few minutes, I don't know how long but when I did it I left it unplugged for 15 minutes and fired it up. computer reset and everything worked out just fine.

it could also be that the TB was bored off center like mentioned above. not much you can do about that except find out what the machine shop can do to correct it

Thanks for the info...the t/b off center is probably my fault...i had to take the butterfly back out b/c when they put it back together, they didn't put the spring back on...and the butterfly has a little bit of play in it.

Also, the code that is being thrown is an IAC failure code (according to Haynes Manual)...I also unplugged the battery during the install to reset it.

Update:

Just went outside and pulled the IAC out...I can't get the IAC Pintle to move, whereas I could before...I'm gunna go and test it in a little and see if it tests ok...if not, it's getting a new one.

If the IAC is bad, it's not helping me fix it.

Also, i took the T/B back off and tried to center it as best as I could. It seemed to help. I'm hoping with a new IAC and some butterfly tinkering I can get it to work. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

yeah that's weird that it won't move, maybe you should stop plaing with it

nah I'm joking.

I'll be watching this post though, see if I can't help

I've never bored a TB but my 56mm TB worked without a hitch after I finally got everything done.

good luck

I went ahead and tested it...and it tested normal...put it back in and left the intake off and it did move in and out *shrugs* now i'll quit playing with it lol.

I've tried moving the butterfly around and i just can't get it right...I know if i take it back they'll be like "no it fits fine, not our fault".

So i dunno what to do. I'm gunna drive it this afternoon and take it back to them tomorrow. I'm just a little irritated with the t/b. I just dunno what to do

i had the same problem on mine when i bored one myself your problem is your butterfly isnt sealing and you have a leak. it can be bored off center and work just fine if you want to bore a stock Ecotec out to 62mm you HAVE to bore it 1 mm off stock centerline in order to not cut through the sides. my second attempt was off centerline and the butterfly plate sealed perfect and no issues to date with it just ask Hypsy he has it on his car now. id say take a feeler gauge and see how far off your plate is and get another made to fit the TB. but the best way is to make the plate and bore the TB to fit the plate for best results.

good luck with it

Check with a scanner if your TP sensor reads 0% when the throttle is closed, I had a bored TB read 3% when closed and caused me problems, ended up having to drill out the sensor mounting holes and set it to 0% then tighten down.

I did a 2.3L 57mm swap and had the EXACT same symptoms. Never did figure it out. I had to put my stock 2.4L 52mm back on and now it runs fine. It pisses me off I can't get the 57mm one to work! If anyone finds out for sure what is wrong, I'd LOVE to know!

Thanks guys.

I suspect the butterfly isn't sealing. There is one thing i've forgotten about though.

There is a small washer on the end of the rod where is goes into the TPS...it holds the rod in place so that they butterfly doesn't just keep moving all around. When me and my dad tried to put it back on, it stretched too much...therefore i left it off. So i took it back off this morning and sure enough, the butterfly does move back and forth. Anybody know where i can get another washer like that?

If that doesn't fix it, i'll try seeing what the TPS is seeing when it is closed.

I want to make absolutely sure that it's the butterfly before I take it back accusing them of screwing it up.

Thanks again for the info...more info is welcome.

*Update*

FINALLY got it running right. took it to a buddy of mine and he said to adjust the idle screw. I finally got the right tools Wednesday (it's a Torx Plus, not a regular torx screw) and backed out the idle screw about 1.5 turns. Worked just fine.
