Header noise ?
Monday, October 10, 2005 7:36 AM
Anyone run into there header makeing a "weird" noise under heavy aceleration? I have a PaceSetter 4 into 1 header and when I get on it it almost sounds like a leak. Now I replaced the gasket and double checked all the bolts are tight and I can't seen to find a leak but the sound is still there. Now I know on V-8's when you install headers they can have a slight sound almost like a ticking and its just the exhaust gases pulseing thru the pipes and I'm wondering if I'm just hearing the 4 cyl engines equlivent of this or if I have a problem somewhere. Thanks in advance for any help.

what exactly is the kind of noise coming from the header? ticking, rattling, whistling, high-pitch noise or lo-pitch, please describe the noise.

i havent heard any unusual noises with any that ive been in

they will make the same kinda noises that V6-V8's will , its nature of the tubing being thiner than a cast iron manifold

make sure the bolts for the ball socket are tight , if you got the coated header , if there is a leak some where it will show up as a black trail where is is leaking from

Ok I've narrowed down where the noise is comming from. Its the flex pipe, It has kind of that bumblebee sound when you rev it hard and it seems to be coming from the flex pipe, the braided type, where the header meets the cat. Bad weld? oh well the cars going back to the shop this afternoon to get it checked since when we put it on it was raining its ass off I couldn't realy narrow it down.

Do these flex pipes alow noise to come thru?

97cavie24ls(JDM&00s/c sedans™) so we are to tighten the bolts on that tight? are the springs on there need to be compressed all the way to far or what... i am getting a leak noise from mine but i know its from that joint... should i tighten the bolts till there all the way down or what..

Re: Header noise ?

ive never heard any one comment about the braided flex joints making any noise

its possible , they are accordian like inside , or it could be the way the motor is making it move

slocav - they need to be almost fully compressed , if you have all the motor and trans mounts , you can go tighter with them

sorry to jack the topic but:
you know, i want to check on my flex pipe, my car is minaly stock, but from what Jackalope described it sounds like the same noise and area coming from my 99z auto. after a while, and in most times after i floor the pedal and release the pedal to shift to the enxt gear i'll get the noise. again the noise is like a rattling-buzzing bees coming from behind the engine. should i unscrew the heat shield and double check the bolts? or would i need to jack the car up and do it too.

u'd advise to remove the factory heat shield? is that ok? again i'd have to wait for sunshine weather to be around, not much room in the garage and usually the weekend's the only time i could do anything cause of work to go through the engine bay for the annoying noise.

No actualy I found out what the problem was. I took my car to the wrong f--king exhaust shop! I thought this guy could do a custom exhaust for my car but instead all he did was f--k up all the parts I bought and brought to him. About the only thing he didn't f--k up was my header. But lets see my 2 1/2 inch flex pipe, SHOT ! HE cut it too short and welded new pipe onto it oh but wait HE WELDED IT ON CROOKED so then my nice new 2 1/2 inch hi flow MagnaFlow cat that he also cut short after he f--ked up welding on the O2 sensor bung. So my cat.... SHOT! Oh and he "accidently" broke my rear O2
sensor...... WHOOPSIE SORRY !!!!!!!!! And then theres my resonator that he also.......
YUP you guessed it CUT it too short and messed up welding the pipe. To top it all off
they even broke the inlet pipe off my one muffler, AND DIDN'T EVEN BOTHER TO TELL ME I HAD TO FIND IT ON MY OWN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I AM SO PISSED ITS NOT EVEN FUNNY !!!!!!!!!!!!!

For anyone how lives in Maryland watch out for an exhaust shop called ............
" EXTREME EXHAUST AND MUFFLER " Stay away do not go anywhere near this shop !!!!!!!!! He may know how to do old cars but front wheel drive performance systems he has no f--king clue as to what the hell he is doing.

Does anybody out there know a GOOD exhaust shop to get my broke ass half assed
P.O.S. exhaust system fixed the RIGHT way ???? From the header back???
PLEASE does anyone know any good shops in the maryland area that can fix this f--k
up.

/\ /\ /\ Don't I wish !!!! This job was done for me as a " thank you " for me sending him so much bussiness over the past years. So now my "FREE" thank you is gonna cost me even more cause now I need to replace all the new parts I just bought and that weren't even on my car for a week cause of them being f--ked up beyond being able to be used.

I'd still go back to him and tell him that he needs to fix it because its costing you money....and if he does fix it you won't ruin his rep.

i wouldn't even have him "fix" it. he'll probably just ghetto rig it some more. i'd have him pay another exhaust shop to redo everything.

jjez, jackalope, sorry, friend. a new 02 sensor (downstream) is almost 100.00 where i am at. never go there again. reminds me of a time I took my car to a firestone dealership to install 4 new tires i bought online, and to use my previous "free, lifetime alignment" warranty...took him 4 hours to do it, charged me ALMOST 100.00 to mount and balance the tires, and then didnt even align the car. said, "umm, your wheel bearings were bad, i couldnt get a proper alignment". (which they werent, i checked later).

point is, piece of sh*t businesses are everywhere, and im sorry you had to go thru that. good luck with finding someone better, my friend.

Thanks guys realy I mean it. Well looks like I get to bend over and take it in the pooper!
I went back to Rob at Extreme and he said theres nothing else he can do. So I went down the street to a competator of his and when they put it up on the rack they all laughed at it and said it looked like s--t. Of corse i already knew that but thanks for the laughs, anyway they said they can fix his fuc- up no problem and salvage all the parts like the cat and flex pipe and res. But to re-do all the pipe work its gonna be $250.00.
But at this point what choice do I have? So I'm schedualed for this saturday at 8 am
to get it re-done, wish me luck!

Oh and BTW, steer clear from a place called EXTREME EXHAUST AND MUFFLER.
Do yourselves a HUGE favor and trust me on this one.

...just read your post up top. i have run the pacestter unit for almost two years now, and no bumblebeee sound. id guess a resonator will help, and a good hi-flow cat. good luck.
