Hey guys,
Im sure you already got one or two of these posts but but i searched and couldnt find anything. so I was wondering how many miles i can have and still put a lot of performance into my motor. My plan is to get around 280 300 with out turbo. so my question really i have too. One... i have 102000 miles is that too many to put performance into my motor? and two..... What am i really gonna need to do to get around 300 horses in my little 2.4L? thanks guys

hmmmm, 300 hp without a turbo. thats a high goal but i guess with everything done right its possible. but id think you are better off just building your engine for boost then putting a turbo on.
i have almost 100,000 on my 2.4 and ive made over 94 passes down the drag strip using a 50 shot of nitrous this year. basically just keep up with your maintence and i think youll be ok

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
yeah dude, no where near 300 out of one these motors with out building it up. and if your going to spend taht much money to try and make it NA, youd be better off to spend your money on the turbo.
Sigga what?
or spend your money on a different car that already comes with close to 300 hp. For instance a 1988 Supra here for sell with new engine for $4000 on campus here in school, not mine, but yeah, if you want, I can give you the number of the guy.
By the time you spend the money on making that much HP from an N/A motor, you could have already slapped on 3 turbo's.

Well, he probably wants to keep his car simple so insurance isn't that high. If he says he has an old cavalier, his insurance will be low no matter. He goes to insurance and says he has a Supra, they'll kick it up an insane amount. Same thing goes for anything of high performance thats stock.
If you maintain the engine properly with modern synthetic fluids the old "tired" engine of the past isn't as common anymore. I've got about 52K on my motor, no problems yet, and I only started modding the engine at about oh.... 50K.
Take care of it and it will last..
and if it blows you can always replace it and keep the boltons.
but seriously if you want 300HP, buy a turbo and go from there.

I beat the hell out of my 99 z24 all the time at the track. 120,000 miles and runs better than it did when i bought it.
Its all on how it has been taking care of.

if I apply my knowledge of V8's here (im sure the concepts are the same) it'd be in your best interest to "freshen" the motor up. But NA would be tough to achieve without a motor build anyway. For turbo, 100k miles may be ok, but I'd go full gaskets, such as head and intake gaskets, and definitely new headbolts. I am a mustang guy (yeah sue me) and with the way I work with cars, I wouldnt touch anything with over 100k without rebuilding it first. My motor right now has 15k miles on it, and if I dont get a power adder on there soon, im just going to leave alone. Its away for winter now so I should have no problem.

if you want to go 300 hp, you will need boost. sure, it could be done without, but you might as well buy a corvette for what you will spend on engine work and tuning.

To get that kind of hp NA, you will pretty much have to replace all the seals anyways. I think your best bet would be to up your compression with new pistons, p&p your head and try to find a good cam setup, do full exhaust, intake, and you might make the 300hp mark and have pretty much revitalized 90% of your engine with new parts.
^^ I dunno about hit the 300 mark by any means. But that would be a good setup and you would be ready for some boost!
Not very good for boost if you up your compression unfortunately.

94 passes in a year? How often do you go to the strip?

Well most tracks are open about 7 months out of the year. 4 weekends, typically per month. and say they have grudge events twice a week every week. at my local track we have wednesday and sunday grudge events, anything goes. and then say you race 3 times every time you hit up the track if you go to every grudge event. that's 168 passes right there, not including more runs, or special events.
