header install
Friday, November 25, 2005 8:19 PM
I went to the same shop that bent my exhaust piping and he told me that he doesn't install headers because if he breaks a bolt he had no way to fix it. would I be better off trying to do the install myself or take it to a regular shop that does tune ups and etc. will I have to take my car to the exhaust place and get it welded at the B pipe? sorry for all the questions, i just want to be armed with the right information before I decide.

If he cant fix it, find another exhaust shop.

I dont think its called a "B pipe" but back to teh subject.

Do you have a Dremel or a hack saw at your disposal?
What kind of header do you have?I'm guessing either the pacesetter, all though these instructions will work with any of the headers out for the twin cam.

>I unscrewed all the bolts that held it to the head
> Then I unscrewed the O2 sensor in the manifold
>Next I undid the bolts that hold it on the stock downpipe
>Next I got the main part of the header bolted to the head
>Then I either connected the header downpipe to the header itself to see where to cut for the connection of the Aftermarket Downpipe to the stock one.
>Then I unscrewed the O2 sensor after the cat
>Next I undid the 3 bolts of the flange that holds the cat onto the catback piece.
> Then I cut and put it all back together, the trial and error thing will come to play in this phase. The trick is to make the cut of the stock downpipe section a little bit long so you will have enough room for the aftermarket one to slide over.
>Then I drove my g/f's car with my 2 downpipe sections to get them welded, The proper marks are crucial here.
>Brought it home, everything was right so i just bolted everything back on.

Just be really careful not to touch your O2 sensors with your skin, Take them out and be really easy with them. While you're working unplug your battery so the pcm can reset itself when you're done

is installing this a problem if i already have my exhuast system done. I have custom pipe from the stock header back. I looked under there today and there wasn;t much room. I'm thinkin I would be better off letting someone do the install. if anyone has installed their header after they had theier custom exhaust run I would love any info that you may have.
thanks

I installed mine myself, I got all that welded by an exhaust shop. If you prefer to have a shop installed it's your choice. But if you install it yourself you'll save some $$$ if the guy just have to weld the parts together. Do like you want, if you don't want to spend time on it, send it to a shop, it may take some time if there's rust on the bolts, but that's not a difficult job.

If the car is naturally aspirated, yes it is called a B pipe. Downpipes are for turbo cars only.

That sounds like a good price. The shops I called wanted no less then $200. So I just did it myself. Good luck with the install.

I thought a "b pipe" was just a short pipe off the collectors that bypassed the cat and the rest of the exhuast?
