LT1 parts in an LN2 - got my flame suit!
Thursday, December 15, 2005 12:06 PM
Ok, so I'm about to get lit up for asking this, but maybe Spotabee will save my ass. I read another post in here and someone (Spotabee) mentioned that a lot of LT1 parts can be used in the LN2. Obviously, he didn't mean the cam, head, block, crank, or other V8 only parts, but what about pistons and rods? Will they fit? The only reason I'm even asking is because if a couple guys got together, they could buy stronger internals for the LT1, split the cost and the parts, and build some nasty motors. It makes sense. 4 pistons or rods for our LN2s cost about as much as 8 of them for the LT1. And maybe the LT1 parts are stronger in stock form? Then you could buy the factory parts and save even more. Gentlemen, please allow me to put on my fireproof helmet. Okay. Let the flames begin!

among other reasons the 4.00 inch bore is way to big and the 5.7in rods are way too long. the ln2 block could never be machined to accept these clearances

I was just curious. Here's what he had said in another thread:

Maybe I took that the wrong way??

maybe he meant similar as in both are pushrod motors but the ln2 has more in common with a Gen I small block (350 tpi,327,305,283,265,302,383,400,etc) than a GEN II (lt1,lt4) maybe something in the valve train could be used but that i realy dont know

I think that's what Abe meant.

Toj, a word of advice, don't start threads with suggestive phrases like "got my flame suit" because that will just give someone a negative aspect of you and think that you are trying to ask a dumb quesiton purposly. If you honestly was curious, just state so in the thread and leave it as that. If someone wants to "flame" you, let them, that will just show them how truely immature they are. People won't learn anything unless they ask...especially on an online forum, you should never be scared to ask a logical or semi logical question.

This is just advice from someone who has been here much longer than you and has been there and done that.

Peace.

Didnt some of the LT1 parts like the throttle body work??

I don't want yall to think I'm remedial or something, really. I was dead serious about wanting to know if any of those parts interchange. But I'm not that knowledgeable about the specifics between motors. Hondas I know. Mitsubishis and stuff like that I know. I'm learning my way around the Cavalier pretty well and I've learned a lot here. I don't post much when I'm here, but I really do want to know what works and what doesn't. So if I gave a bad impression, my bad.

Dont feel bad man...Ive been here for a long time but theres still a lot
of things i have no clue about when it comes to performance. We all
have our strengths and weaknesses.

Some LT1 FPRs will fit.

there are quite a few parts from other chevy pushrod motors that will interchange with the 2200/2.2. I am working on an immense "Build Guide" right now that will detail all of this. However, for the most part the stuff that interchanges is only things like rockers, and possibly other valvetrain components, but most require a good bit of modification/fabrication to work properly. Pistons and rods definitely won't work though

no your thinking of the ls1 throttle body that fits the gmpp fabricated intake manifold for the ecotec. the lt1 throttle body would never fit the ecotec the quad 4 or any other cavalier motor period

As mentioned above, the fuel pressure regulators from the LT1(Corvette) will fit the per '98s. Infact the part #s were the same on the Auto Zone web site. Both Accel and Aeromotive Engeneering have adjustable have adjustable FPRs, with A.E.s being the better unit(and more expensive) that can adjust for boost pressure also.
The twin tower ignition coils are also the same, aftermarket ones are made by Accel, MSD, Summit Racing and Jeg's.
The aftermarket narrow bodied rockers for the centerbolt valve covers will work also(the '98+ 2200's require the self guided rockers,Howell Automotive has a good kit here) by Crane Cams, Comp Cams and Proform.

With all the items listed above, you get what you pay for. The better quality and/or performing parts cost more.
