Well after noticing the other day that I am starting to get crank walk. I decided to pull out my tired motor and drop in a replacement. I am getting another 2200 from a buddys junkyard for $300 and it only has 41,000 miles on it. But I'm shooting for a few more hp this time around. I've been doing alot of reading, and being a mechanic I have a good understanding of whats up. I would like to give you guys my plan and if you would be so kind as to give me a little push in the right direction then I will be getting started asap.
1998 2200 5 speed
Port the head
upgrade to crane full roller rockers
stock cam from a say 96 2.2 ( I belive I had seen that I should go from 4.20 to like 4.60 lift?)
pacesetter 4-1
magnaflow cat (my cats bad anyway)
motor mounts
power pullys
CAI
maybe a 2.3 tb
Thats my plan for now, any idea what I can expect for power?
RSM pulley is the best, IMO.
I don't know if that cam will work on the 2200...check up on that...
Expected power gains...it'll be a bit noticeable but I don't think it'll be all that great unless you do more to upgrade your valvetrain like your pushrods, springs, retainers etc.

you will not be able to use the older cam.
just get a crane regrind.
Yup, get a Crane regrind. Have a custom profile done while you are at it, make some power out of it.

Ok I went back and checked I found the cam info
here. but at a second glance it does say "in theory".
Call Crane Cams, 386-252-1151, talk to them about a regrind. Be ready to tell them what you plan on for the motor. They'll then match you with a cam suited for you application.
^^ how much does that usually cost. i've heard anywhere from $130-200 and i was j/w
$162.40, including shipping costs.
same ur money and get and ecotec
nah, if I was gonna do a swap I would be putting in a worked 3.4 pontiac motor. I haven't seen many people going that route yet. I might do that anyway down the road. This is my daily driver so I can only tie it up for a weekend tops right now.
hrrrm, my cam was only like 130 bucks from crane.
El Fuego - have you tested other pullies out or do you just like RSM because you have them? I have the jpower pullies and there not bad, I had to get rid of my speaker amp though, but I was just wondering if there is any difference at all from company to company with pullies, I doubt even from a great pulley maker to a lousy one you'd notice more than 1 or 2hp.
Am I right or wrong?
The RSM one is stock size, but lightened. That way you can use the stock belt, and it won't effect your charging system.

Not to mention I did the RSM 62mm TB and the intake manifold combo..... got .5 off my time....
and did the crank (stock size but only 8 oz.) and I noticed a LARGE difference too !!
It was a great product, light weight, looks good... oh and I HATE RSM ... so that does say A LOT about how good there product is for me to still back it .....

I have tried undriven pully sets, and they sux. The RSM is stock size but lighter, Meaning quicker rev ups, a little bit more power, and No charging problems.

I <3 your RSM pulley too

yes i would like to kno what crank walk means also. so i kno what to look for. have never heard of this.
DRIVE HARD OR DONT DRIVE AT ALL!!!

crankwalk is the DSM killer, notorious in the 2g DSM's. Use your imagination. You will notice MAJOR wear on your thrust bearing and most likely, your crank will have a groove or gouge in it from moving, and what happens is the crank walks, throws off the crank angle sensor, car stalls. Crank walk is an engine killer. I've never honestly of heard of crankwalk in a J-car, but if that's what you think it is and you want to tear the motor down, have at it.

I know my case is crank walk. When I had it on the lift there was too much lash in the crank. I could feel it and see it.
on a side note. underdrive pullys wont effect your charging system. alternators aren't really effected by engine speed when working properly. Atleast this is what I learned from a recent Toyota body electrical diag. course.
well the jtuner crank pulley I have is smaller in size and lighter ( lighter for quicker revs and smaller to slow down belt speed ) this pulley doesnt affect that c harging system BUT.... I also have the overdrive alternator pulley which is bigger than stock diameter ( to slow down belt speed more ) and this does affect that charging system, works fine on J-cars just no amps or high end stereo equipment should be used. Underdrive/Overdrive pullies do a lot more for performance than just the actual weight of the pulley though imo. But the weight matters to me a little for quicker revs and mainly because I am a weight redux freak.
In your case, I'd recommend the stock alt pulley and the RSM crank pulley
