I was wondering if i need to replace the O2 sensors when i install my header my car has 75,000 miles on it and my dad says i need to along with new plugs. and i was just gonna ask the guys who would know.
It wouldnt be any fun if it was easy.
you dont need a new sensor or plugs...you prolly get a CEL like everyone else for the O2..but it seems that no one really know how to fix it...anyone know cus i had this CEL for about a year and i swear my car is in limp mode....
It could hurt to replace it with that many miles on it. Pull it out and see how it looks.

True this fact...youll prolly end up replacing it awywayz down the road...so replace it and let me know if it cures your CEL if you get one
well it would be nice if i didnt have to replace them cause of the price on them but if mine are bad i will.

Strange.. why would he get a CEL with a header. I don't had any problems with mine. Maybe Z24 are differents......
If you have the cash, I'd say change the sensor and the plugs I would check for gap and build-up and then decide. I didnt change my O2 sensor and every once in a while my CEL will come on and then go off after several min., hours, days...it's pretty moody. Never really noticed any operational problems though! Good luck with that!

Please explain this more? I have a header no CEL from the header. What is the code your getting?
With your miles I would replace the O2 sensor on the manifold.

It is a code for a slow O2 read..block 1...and replacing the O2 does nothing.
In my personal experience, the heavy exhaust flow differences, as well as heat differences, and also the PCM's likeness to run extremely rich after the installation of the header are all factors that lead to malfunctioning o2 sensors shortly after a header install if the sensor already has had a long life. I find it in your best interest to replace it. Do NOT TOUCH the sensor probe while installing it, the oil from your hands will foul it.

It also depends on
where the O2 sensor is in the exhaust stream. The distance from the head and the location around the tube. When I installed my header, I moved the sensor downstream about 30" farther than it was. Its only a basic O2 sensor (not a heated one), so it takes forever to go into closed loop. No codes, just takes forever.

You mean bank 1? That does not tell you which one. It will always say bank 1 sensor (1 or 2).

If you are getting a code for slow o2 sensor bank 1 sensor 1, it's the sensor in your header. you need to replace it, however, you have to reset the PCM also.

ya this what i have...bank 1 sensor 1....how do i reset the PCM???
with that many miles on it, you might as well go ahead and replace it.
but, some have gotten bad o2, some others no problems. what i heard of one guy doing was shortening the o2 bung length, so the sensor sits farther inside the stream. that seemed to work for some.

before replacing the sensor, unhook the terminals from your battery, change the sensor, drink a beer, then rehook up the battery. bye bye code.

ok, im gonna give that a try....ill let you know what happens with this...you sugest i get the sensor through GM...or get one through autozone..pepboys etc.

GM will rip you a new one. I paid like $30 I think for the Bosch OE Type replacement sensor through Advance Auto Parts, and I've only gone through a few since I've owned the car. Make sure and do the OE type and not the universal.
