I'm looking to build myself a short ram air intake for my ecotec.
any pointers before i get started?

The one on the NY Jbodies site is for the 2200, not the ECOTEC.
You would just need a basic filter and find yourself a couple couplers and t bolts along with 2 1/2" piping. Depending on if you find an actual bend or not will depend on how many elbows you need.

Ive been trying to make the 2.4 intake swap for the eco a well know thing for ever it just never seems to cathc on. becasue people seem to love spending money on metal tubes on filters.

thanks everybody...i think im gonna skip the piping all together and put a filter right after the box on the throttle body.

Well remember, your plastic intake pieces are still restrictive...basically adding a filter wouldn't be doing much. The reason put that pipe connecting to their throttle body is to make it more free flowing.

i went cheap on an intake and hated it, got an aem..LOVE IT!

Whats the diff between CAI and Short Ram Intake? I heard that with a CAI you have the potential of ruining the engine if you happen to drive through deep puddles. I have a 2003 Cavi, with a 2.2 Ecotec, can anyone shed some light on which to go with? Im new to the mods scene, also any idea what sounds good on a cav as far as exhaust - single outlet.
Not much difference between both, some claims cold air is better (some people will say that it will suck the warm air of the asphalt... blablabla crap, when you're moving it's not the case...) Some other prefer warm air. There's a lot of debate on both kind of intake, but I think you should go with what you prefer. As for the "water fear" about the cold air, I wouldn't even worry about that, you would need to submerge the filter completly.... which I think is really hard to do on an asphalt road... For the exhaust I have a vibrant catback with an 18" resonator, sound pretty good, but it always depend on what kind of sound you like...
