Hi. I just want to know how to remove the head from my 99 z24 w/o EGR. I searched the site for a while came up with nothing. I'm not really sure if this belongs in performance forum or the maintenance forum, but I know many of you have don the 086 head swap, so I'll ask you.
I have already removed the Intake and exhaust manifolds, cams, cam carriers, drained the oil and coolant, and removed 8 of the 10 head bolts. The remaining 2 bolts are underneath the timing chain housing. Does the entire timing chain housing need to be removed to get to the two bolts? If so, can it be done without pulling the entire motor from the vehicle? Thanks.
Yes, you have to remove the timing chain and assembly... the housing... etc.
Get a big rolling floor jack and put it under the oil pan with a small block of wood. Then remove the motor mount, jack up the engine, take off the front right tire, remove the crankshaft pulley (27mm bolt) and then take out all the timing cover bolts. While you are in there get a new timing chain tensioner and replace it.

Well I guess I didn't make myself clear enough to either Scott or Ron. I said that I had already removed the cams and cam carriers. There is no way to do that without opening up the timing chain housing. I did replace the timing chain and gears not too long ago when I did the secret cam swap.
Anyways, I did figure it out. I forgot t to remove the lower motor mount bracket, which exposes 4 bolts which screw the oil pan and timing chain housing together. Good news is that the head & valves looks fine. Bad news is that there is a crack in the third piston. My dad borrowed a cherry picker from a friend. We will have to remove the oil pan and check the bearings, rods and everything tomorrow or Wednesday. Oh well, thanks for the input.
